Although the Kansas Turnpike Authority Board made the announcement in January, the idea of eliminating toll booths and going cashless has been discussed for years. The switch to cashless tolling in Kansas begins July 1.

Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes wanted to give all local motorists a heads up as they conduct their travels this summer.

"To make it easier on you, you need to get a K-tag," said Hayes. "It is free to get a K-tag. It will be directly billed to your account. That is something we will be sharing on Explore Great Bend so you know this as you travel throughout the state."

As the toll booths will be taken out, motorists will not have to stop. Charges to motorists will be identified with their K-tag or by their license plate registration. Hayes said drivers with a K-tag sticker will pay half compared to those without.

"Here it comes," added Hayes. "You really want to make sure you get a K-tag for your vehicles. It's easy to do online."

Replacing the toll booths, the Kansas Turnpike Authority will have 21 checkpoints along Interstate 70, 470 in Topeka, I-335 in Emporia and I-35 to Oklahoma.
