The Sunflower Summer is a program that was created by the Kansas State Department of Education and is now organized by Kansas Tourism. The online app is designed to provide a variety of ways for families to get out, explore the state and enjoy time together.

Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Christina Hayes said the app includes dozens of attractions, museums, zoos and more where families can go for free.

"You can go anywhere in the state of Kansas that is accepted through the app, and you get to go in for free," said Hayes. "The State of Kansas is going to reimburse those places. So the places we have will be reimbursed for all those people that come and travel."

Last year’s Sunflower Summer program ranged from the end of May through the middle of August. This year, there will be three Great Bend destinations included on the app.

"The State of Kansas will be announcing soon which three in Great Bend you can go explore," said Hayes. "The idea is get people from outside to come to Great Bend and explore our attractions that we have featured on that app."

Users can search “Sunflower Summer” in their app stores.
