KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier drove in three runs, top prospect Nicky Lopez had an RBI single in his big league debut, and the Kansas City Royals routed the Texas Rangers 11-5. Alex Gordon and Jorge Soler also drove in two runs apiece for the Royals, who scored nine times in the first inning and soon knocked Rangers starter Shelby Miller from the game. Danny Duffy earned the win with five shaky innings for Kansas City.
ATLANTA (AP) — St. Louis hit four home runs, including three-run shots by Marcell Ozuna, Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong, and the Cardinals beat struggling right-hander Mike Foltynewicz and the Atlanta Braves 14-3 on Tuesday night. Jack Flaherty did not allow a hit through four innings. St. Louis led 11-0 before Flaherty gave up three runs and three hits in the fifth.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA says it is forming a working group to consider how its rules can be modified to allow college athletes to be compensated for use of their names, images and likenesses. NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors say Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman will head the new federal and state legislation working group.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Stephen Curry nailed nine 3-pointers while scoring 36 points as the Golden State Warriors blasted the Portland Trail Blazers, 116-94 in the opener of the NBA’s Western Conference finals. The two-time NBA MVP outplayed the Portland duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, who combined to go 11 for 31. Klay Thompson had 26 points for the Warriors, who were without injured star Kevin Durant due to a leg injury.
CHICAGO (AP) _ The New Orleans Pelicans have won the NBA draft lottery and will most likely select Duke forward Zion Williams with the No. 1 pick next month. The Pelicans won the lottery for the first time since 2012, when they selected Anthony Davis. The Grizzlies will choose second, followed by the Knicks, Lakers and Cavaliers.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ The Boston Bruins have a three-games-to-none lead in the NHL’s Eastern Conference final following a 2-1 victory over the Hurricanes at Carolina. Chris Wagner and Brad Marchand scored 5:07 apart in the second period of Boston’s sixth straight playoff win, their longest streak since 1978. Tuukka Rask stopped 35 shots and allowed only a goal by Calvin de Haan.
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Major League Baseball has placed Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias on administrative leave while it looks into his arrest in a domestic battery case. In previous MLB investigations, the length of the administrative leave has frequently been extended past the seven-day deadline period while the probe continues. Los Angeles police arrested Urias on Monday for investigation of misdemeanor domestic battery in the parking lot of a shopping mall.
