KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs waived defensive tackle Roy Miller, two days after he was arrested in Florida and accused of assaulting his wife during an argument at their home. Miller signed a $1.4 million, one-year contract with the Chiefs this past offseason.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost says he nearly died after a fall on his farm near Atlanta just over a week ago. Yost was working in a hunting stand on his property when he fell about 20 feet. He shattered his pelvis and broke four ribs. He says surgeons said he lost so much blood that he nearly died. He is confined to a wheelchair for the next two months but vowed that “by spring training, I should be pretty much full-go.”
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Senior center Shaquille Morris had 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes to lead No. 6 Wichita State past College of Charleston 81-63. Morris was 7 of 11 from the floor and part of the Shockers (2-0) dominating the interior.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Cam Newton threw for four touchdowns and the Carolina Panthers set a team record with 548 total yards in a 45-21 dismantling of the Miami Dolphins. Newton threw for 254 yards, ran for another 95 and hit Devin Funchess for a pair of TDs. Jonathan Stewart ran for a season-high 110 yards to help the Panthers improve to 7-3, a half-game behind New Orleans for first place in the NFC South.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – Ben McAdoo will remain the New York Giants’ head coach at least until the end of the season despite the team’s 1-8 start. Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch said in a statement today that they won’t evaluate the team and make any moves until the end of the season. McAdoo’s future has been a major topic the past two weeks in the wake of a 34-point home loss to the Los Angeles Rams and yesterday’s 10-point loss to the previously-winless San Francisco 49ers.
UNDATED (AP) – Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger is the unanimous winner of the National League Rookie of the Year Award after batting .267 with 39 home runs and 97 RBIs last season. And Aaron Judge has become the first New York Yankee since Derek Jeter in 1996 to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Judge won the award unanimously in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America after leading the AL with a rookie-record 52 home runs last season.
ATLANTA (AP) – The Atlanta Braves have hired former Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays executive Alex Anthopoulos as their general manager. He succeeds John Coppolella, who was forced to resign on Oct. 2 after an ongoing investigation by Major League Baseball disclosed rule violations committed by the Braves in the international player market. Anthopoulos previously was the Blue Jays’ GM and spent the last two yeras as the Dodgers’ vice president of baseball operations.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas freshman quarterback Cole Kelley has been suspended indefinitely following his weekend arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Kelley started four straight games while senior Austin Allen recovered from a shoulder injury. Kelley had thrown eight touchdown passes and four interceptions this year.
