KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs are the lone unbeaten team in the NFL at 5-0, but they’ve overcome a lot to reach that point. Injuries have mounted, the schedule has been filled with tough opponents and they will have played five primetime games in the first eight weeks. Their next big test is Sunday against Pittsburgh, the team that beat them in last year’s playoffs.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Sen. Claire McCaskill has asked the Department of Homeland Security to give “full consideration” to the St. Louis Cardinals’ request for certification that would give the team certain legal protections in the event of a terrorist attack at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are seeking certification under the Safety Act, which encourages organizations to implement anti-terrorism measures by providing protection against lawsuits should a site be targeted in a terrorist attack.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State has dismissed Eternati Willock, a member of the Big 12 all-freshman team a year ago, from its women’s basketball program for repeated violations of team rules. Willock appeared in 31 games last season, helping the Wildcats beat Drake in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Stanford. The 6-foot-4 forward from Scarborough, Canada, averaged 6.6 points and 5.1 rebounds in 19.9 minutes, and was expected to be a key piece of this year’s team.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Niko Medved knew all about the recent sad history of Drake basketball, about the losing, the struggle to stay competitive in the Missouri Valley Conference, the general apathy surrounding the program. But he took the head coaching job anyway and now, a week into his first preseason practices with the Bulldogs, he is headlong into the process of trying to change that culture.
UNDATED (AP) – Alabama, Georgia and Auburn are separating themselves in the SEC. They’re doing it even though the Crimson Tide’s offense looks methodical at times, the Bulldogs are playing a freshman quarterback and the Tigers can have trouble moving the ball. The one thing the trio does well week in and week out, is play defense. Their defensive squads are among the best in the country, and it has them poised to make a run at the College Football Playoffs.
HOUSTON (AP) – Tomas Martinez scored in the 63rd minute and his free kick in the 77th led to an own goal, helping the Houston Dynamo beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1. Houston (12-10-10) moved within one point of a third-place tie with Portland and Seattle. Second-place Sporting KC (12-8-12) needed at least a draw to secure a playoff spot.
UNDATED (AP) – Twenty-two ranked teams will play this weekend and no one game features two of them. That doesn’t happen often, especially when conference play kicks into gear. The last time there was a weekend after September with no games matching ranked teams was November 2009. The best matchups include No. 6 TCU at Kansas State and No. 11 Miami against Georgia Tech.
CLEVELAND (AP) – The New York Yankees are the 10th major league team to win a best-of-5 postseason series after losing the first two games. Didi Gregorius (DEE’-dee greh-GOHR’-ee-uhs) homered twice and had three RBIs off Corey Kluber as the Yankees downed the Indians, 5-2 in Cleveland. David Robertson got the win with two hitless innings of relief, and Aroldis Chapman struck out four in his two innings of work to get the series-clinching save.
CHICAGO (AP) – The Washington Nationals will host the Chicago Cubs in Game 5 of the NL Division Series later today, with the winner heading to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers in the Championship Series. Stephen Strasburg struck out 12 and allowed just three hits over seven innings as the Nats blanked the Cubs, 5-0 at Wrigley Field. Michael A. Taylor put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the eighth inning.
CLEVELAND (AP) – Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James will sit out the rest of the NBA preseason and could miss the season opener after aggravating his sprained left ankle. James hurt the ankle again while making his exhibition debut against Chicago on Tuesday, scoring 17 points with eight turnovers. Cavs coach Tyronn (TY’-rahn) Lue was noncommittal when asked today if James will be ready for the opener against Boston next week, saying he wasn’t sure.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Andrew Wiggins has finally signed his five-year extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves after pondering the offer for more than two months. The package is worth nearly $150 million and does not include a player option, but it concludes a major piece of team business a week before the Wolves’ season opener. The 22-year-old Wiggins averaged 23.6 points in his third season in the league and is expected to help the Timberwolves end a 13-season playoff drought.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is telling New England fans not to worry about the left shoulder injury that kept him out of practice earlier in the week. He says he’ll be on the field Sunday to play the New York Jets in a fight for first place in the AFC East. Brady reportedly went for an MRI on the left shoulder this week, but he says it’s just the typical bumps and bruises all players pick up this time of year.
