As part of the City of Great Bend’s attempts to improve the algae bloom issues at Veterans Lake, they’ve asked the Public Works Department to put together a sample plan in hopes to find out what is supplying nutrients for the blue-green algae in the lake. They’ll sample three storm water entry points on the west, north, and east sides of the lake. Charlie Suchy is the Utility Superintendent for Great Bend.

Suchy said they are trying to pinpoint what area of town could be feeding the most phosphorus into the storm water system that flows into the lake, so they know where they need to focus their public education efforts. Suchy said they could even find out what the biggest contributor of algae nutrients are in the lake.
