The Senate is viewed as the last bastion for Kansas moderates, who are a roadblock to many social and fiscal policies that the
more conservative House and Gov. Sam Brownback support.
Some of those challenges are emerging, including a primary between Senate President Steve Morris of Hugoton and the more
conservative Republican Rep. Larry Powell of Garden City.
Democrats say many Kansas voters are growing frustrated with Brownback’s policies and lack of job creation. They say that could
help their party and moderate Republicans, if moderates can survive the August primaries.
