Welcome to week #3 of our on-going visit here. No trivia winner this week, but Mark Schmitt gave the Dillon’s question a good try. Mark said the first Dillon’s he remembered was at the SW corner of 11th and Main in Great Bend. You’re Right, Mark, there was one there. But not the first one! (By the way, when I arrived in Great Bend back in 1973 that former Dillon’s location at 11th and Main was a Gibson, Titus and Stafford store.) I sure a lot of people remember them.
A few random thoughts: we have jumped from a pretty nice spring (after the rain came, that is) right into what seems like the middle of July with temps in the 90’s and low 100’s. Yikes! In my time here I can’t remember this much heat this early. And more nasty weather across the state. We have had more hail and tornados in Barton county in the last ten years than in the previous 25. Call it climate change or whatever, but something weird is going on.
Went to a wedding in Pittsburg, Ks a few days ago, Pittsburg being just a hop, skip and a jump from Joplin. There were lots of fund raisers going on for the Joplin people. We talked to an insurance adjuster at our hotel. She had been there since the tornado and was planning on staying a while longer. As our neighbors in Greensburg know, the process of recovery is just beginning for Joplin. Our prayers go out to them. Salvation Army and Red Cross are still appealing for donations, so please support them if you can. By the way, the wedding was nice , and Pittsburg is kind of a neat town. Takes a while to get there from Great Bend, though; it’s a 300 mile drive.
Got any funny animal stories you want to share here? We had a great Yorkie for about 15 years, and as Yorkies are, he was a fearless defender of his home and people. He weighed in at about 10 pounds, but he thought he was a hundred. Funny thing though: he was afraid of manholes and even manhole covers. We’d go on walks and he would give all sewer openings and manhole covers a wide berth, being sure to walk wayyyyy around them. As far as we know, he never had a close encounter with a Sewer Creature of any kind, so we could never figure out what the problem was. Just a Yorkie thing, I guess. Do you have any amusing or unusual dog (or cat) tales? Share ’em here.
OK, one more time for the Dillon’s question: where was the first Dillon’s store located in Great Bend? Answer it and become our latest Registered Certified Trivia Expert.
Thanks for visiting here. Have a great week ahead!
