Hi, welcome to O’Connoradioland, a new weekly (or more often if I really feel energetic) feature here on greatbendpost.com. Thanks for taking a look at us. I hope you’ll enjoy this mix of humor, trivia, musings about life, weather, music, sports, old cars and whatever else might come along.
My name is John O’Connor. You may know me as host of the Trading Post show on KVGB. I also hosted the 6 to 10 am morning show for 25 years on KVGB, semi-retiring in 2009. My time with the station goes back to 1973 when I started out on the night shift. My only time away from ‘the microphone zone’ was 1978 through 1983, when my wife and I owned The Record Rack in the Zarah Mall building at Lakin and Main in Great Bend. I enjoyed the retail music business, but really missed broadcasting, so we sold the store in late ’83 and I returned to KVGB in 1984.
I invite your comments and suggestions about this feature. Annnnnd (big dramatic pause) if you can correctly answer our weekly trivia question (s), you will be duly recognized and honored -yes HONORED- as an RCTE–that’s Registered Certified Trivia Expert on this site. Plus, if you win often enough I’ll find some kind of prize for you. I haven’t figured out yet how often is often enough, so as they say in the glue business, “stick around” and we’ll have more details soon on a website near you.
Okay, a couple of trivia questions first off; one on Great Bend history and one on music trivia:
1. In the 1970’s what was the name of the 10th street restaurant in the building now occupied by (one of our family favorites) Delgado’s?
2. In what Supremes hit did Diana Ross mention the other group members by name?
The first correct answer wins. Just hit ‘comment’ to reply. We’ll have results in a few days. Good luck and have fun. See you on the air on AM 1590 KVGB.
