Pay your bill, keep the service. That’s generally how using
public or private utilities works. That is not necessarily the case at
Sunflower Estates, the mobile home and RV community long known as Finer Mobile
Home Park on the west edge of Great Bend. The property serves approximately 50
mobile home and RV residents, but without individual water meters for each
property, all residents are now under threat of having their water shut off.

“I’ve reached out to the city, and the city said there’s
nothing they can do about it,” said one tenant. “I’ve reached out to code
enforcement, and code enforcement says there’s nothing they can do about it. I
feel like my hands are tied. As a tenant, I feel like I shouldn’t have to be
going through all these issues, but we’ve got no help. It’s almost like nobody
cares.”

The tenant admitted to being slightly behind on payments,
but said his last water and sewer bill totaled approximately $42. He said
tenants are being asked to take extraordinary measures to knock down the property’s
total bill that is several thousand dollars.

“The company themselves told me we had until (Feb. 13),” the
tenant said. “They called me and were like, ‘Is there any way you can take a
loan out, or a loan against your car, or you borrow from your taxes, or from
your 401(k)? Because we really need to get this paid.”

While this tenant was given the Feb. 13 date, he said others
around the property were told that if bills were not paid in full by Feb. 9,
the city would be shutting off water to the property on Feb. 10.

“The ones who only owe a little bit, that’s not fair to us
when others owe a substantial amount,” the tenant said. “Why’d you let it go
unchecked so long? Why would you let them skate by that long without doing something
about it?”

Sunflower Estates, located at 5501 9th Street in Great Bend,
was purchased in early 2025. A chamber ribbon cutting was held at the facility
last October. A press release from the event said the new owners are dedicated
to restoring pride and community spirit to one of Great Bend’s longest-standing
manufactured housing neighborhoods. The new leadership team is investing in
upgrades, improving management, and providing flexible homeownership and RV
living opportunities designed to help working families and travelers alike feel
at home.

Sunflower Estates has not responded to an email request for
comments about the potential water shutoff.

Great Bend mobile home tenants facing threat of water shutoff

Domestic crude-oil production dropped to a 15-month low last week, down from the record setting heights achieved in the last couple of months. Last week, the US Energy Information Administration published its lowest weekly production average since November of 2024. At just over 13.2 million barrels a day, output is down nearly half a million barrels a day from last week and a quarter-million barrels a day from the same week last year. Weekly production reports from EIA have held consistently over 13.5 million barrels a day since last September. By November, average output surpassed 13.8 million in each of nine consecutive weekly reports, a streak that ended three weeks ago.

Commercial crude inventories dipped 3.5 million barrels to just over 420 million as of January 30. The Energy Information Administration reports stockpiles are four percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

The government reports another 200-thousand barrels added the strategic stockpiles stored on our behalf in some caverns in Louisiana. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve tops out slightly over 415 million barrels, up 20 million barrels or five percent from a year ago.

At 6.2 million barrels a day, crude imports are up half a million daily barrels from a week ago but down 700-thousand barrels from the same week a year ago. The four week average is down 3.2%. The government says crude exports are down more than half a million barrels, but remain above four million barrels per day.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is up five gas rigs and up one oil rig for a total of 551 rigs. The breakout for horizontal rigs is up five. Texas is up six rigs.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is unchanged in Western Kansas at six active rigs. The tally east of Wichita is down two at five rigs. The totals are down 21 percent from a month ago and 26% lower than a year ago. On Friday, operators were drilling or about to start on a lease in Gove County and two in Rooks County.

As of this week, operators in Kansas have drilled 39 wells from spud to completion in 2026, down from 86 during the same period last year. So far this year, 15 active operators have drilled nearly 50-thousand total feet of well bore in Kansas. Last year at this time, 40 operators were listed, drilling nearly double that total footage. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 13 new well-completions this week, 78 so far this year, compared to 143 by this time last year. There are four new completions west of Wichita including one in Ellis County and one in Gove County.

Kansas regulators approved five new drilling locations this week, all of them in Western Kansas, including one new permit in Stafford County and one in Rooks County. That's 45 new permits this year compared to 66 last year at this time.

State geologists recently upgraded online reporting on oil and gas in Kansas, and the newest numbers reflect a continuing decline in production. Only one of the top ten counties posted an increase. Statewide output through the first three quarters of last year drops to just over 70,000 barrels a day, from just over 73,000 daily barrels for all of 2024. Ellis County production drops to just over 5,400 barrels a day, down 210 barrels from the year before. Ranked second among counties, Haskell County averaged just a few barrels shy of five thousand barrels a day, up 599 barrels for the only countywide increase. Finney County drops to 4,100 barrels a day. Barton County checks in with 3,736 barrels per day, down by 110 barrels.&nbsp; Russell County drops to just over 3,300 barrels, and Stafford County dips to just over 2,300 barrels a day.

Cleanup continued after a massive drilling rig tipped over and crashed to the tundra in Alaska's North Slope. The huge ConocoPhillips rig is known as "the Beast." &nbsp;It toppled along a frozen gravel road within the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. According to the Anchorage Daily News, a third-party firm is investigating the cause of the accident and subsequent fuel spill, but only when the weather makes it safe. Temperatures rose into the 30s the day of the incident but returned to subzero conditions afterward.

The recent nationwide cold snap dubbed "Winter Storm Fern" forced a huge draw on energy in the US.&nbsp; Fern spurred the largest weekly net natural gas withdrawal in Energy Department records. The numbers reflect increased demand for both space heating and electricity generation, as well as reduced supplies due to equipment freeze-offs and shut-ins. Natural gas spot prices for the week nearly doubled in some locations. In the week ending January 25, 2026, natural gas generation in the Lower 48 states increased 14% from the previous week while generation from solar, wind, and hydropower declined. Coal-fired electricity generation increased 31% from the previous week. EIA says during the week of Winter Storm Fern, Nuclear generation was nearly unchanged.Independent Oil and Gas Service notes some familiar names in its list of the top Kansas drillers last year. 

East of Wichita that's RJ Energy, Colt Energy, C&amp;G Drilling, McGown Drilling and TDR Construction. In Western Kansas, Duke Drilling leads the list with 73 wells drilled to total depth, followed by Murfin Drilling with 52 wells. Rounding out the top five were Discovery Drilling, Pickrell Drilling, and Sterling Drilling.

drought monitor, as of Tuesday, February 3rd, indicates a little deterioration
from last week to moderately dry in extreme northwest and along the Missouri
border and a sliver on the Oklahoma border in South Central Kansas.&nbsp; The six to ten day forecast (February 10 to 14)
indicates a 80 to 90% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and a 33
to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day forecast indicates
(February 12 to 18) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely above normal for temperatures
and a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.

You
can’t live in Kansas, especially the western half of the state, and not think
about water (or the lack of it).&nbsp; While
2025 was a good year overall for precipitation, the previous five years saw
much of the state in varying degrees of severe to extreme and even exceptional
drought.&nbsp; Throughout the history of
Kansas, producers have experienced drought cycles followed by normal to above
normal periods of precipitation.&nbsp; There
was an approximately twenty year cycle with drought cycles occurring in the
1930s, 1950s, 1970s.&nbsp; However, over the
last forty or so years, droughts are occurring more often and with greater
severity.&nbsp; By many measures, the recent
drought period was worse than the “Dirty Thirties.”&nbsp; But thanks to improved cultural practices
(conservation tillage and improved irrigation for example) and improved plan
breeding techniques, producers, within limits, were better able to cope.

The
legislature and Governor have made water conservation, especially of the
Ogalala and other aquifers in the western half of the state a priority, to
extend the life of the aquifer and irrigated crop production, there is much
more to consider.&nbsp; Today a brief overview
of water sources and use with next week discussing conservation measures.

In
Kansas we have the sources of water – groundwater (aquifers), reservoirs, and
surface water (rivers).&nbsp; Groundwater is
the primary source in Western Kansas.&nbsp; As
you move to the central and eastern parts of the state, reservoirs and rivers
become more important.&nbsp; For example, a
city like Wichita has Cheney Lake and wells as their primary source of
water.&nbsp; Parts of the state have little
groundwater.

As
a whole, around 80% of our water resource use is irrigation, 10% municipal, 3%
industrial, and around 1% each for livestock and recreation.&nbsp; The percentages vary across the state.&nbsp; In Southwest Kansas, some counties water
usage is essentially 100% agricultural.&nbsp;
In the &nbsp;eastern third of the
state, industry is the largest consumptive user, and municipal use predominates
in urban centers.

To
help understand usage further, average rainfall varies dramatically across the
state.&nbsp; Southeast Kansas is around forty
inches annually on average.&nbsp; The eastern
half of the state is in that thirty plus inches which decrease gradually as you
move west.&nbsp; Here in the Great Bend area,
it’s around 26 to 28 inches.&nbsp; It
continues to decrease heading to the Colorado border till the average is around
fourteen to sixteen inches.

Barton Ag Instructor Dr. Vic Martin - Saving Water and Agriculture – Part I

Roger Myers, Wild West historian, will present a program about famous cattle trade characters of the old west at the Barton County Historical Society, Monday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.&nbsp; The program will be in the Ray Schulz Research Library at the historical village. Members will be admitted for free, others are $5 at the door. Historical Society memberships may be purchased at the door that evening or during regular business hours.

Myers, a retired cooperative general manager living south of Larned, is a graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, with a bachelor of science degree in accounting and a minor in history. He has been studying and writing old west Kansas history for about 30 years, with articles published in&nbsp;Wild West,&nbsp;True West&nbsp;and&nbsp;Old West&nbsp;magazines and other peer-reviewed journals such as&nbsp;Wild West History Journal&nbsp;and&nbsp;Panhandle-Plains Historical Review. Myers has written a book, tentatively titled “Violence on the Plains”, covering several violent events in Kansas old west history set to be published this year by The History Press.

Myers will speak about Ham Bell, Tom Sherman, Big Nose Kate and other major players, who were in Great Bend before moving to Dodge City. He recently discovered that Bell, who later became Ford County sheriff, landed in the local jail in the 1870s.

The Barton County Historical Society is located at 85 S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend, and is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter.&nbsp; Summer hours, which include weekends begin in April.

No paid agitators could be found outside the Barton County
Courthouse Saturday morning, but a small group of local residents gathered at
Lakin and Main for an anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) protest, organized by Women for Kansas.

“We know what happens when you give people who are poorly
trained no boundaries,” said Pam Martin. “And you give them guns. And you let
them mask. And you don’t listen to the Constitution. We know how that goes. ICE
is just terrible right now. It wasn’t until this happened. They had boundaries,
but now they’re targeting anyone who is not white. It’s just pure racism is
what it is.”

Several hundred immigration-related protests were held
around the country in 2025. In January 2026, largely because of the pair of fatal
shootings in Minneapolis, several hundred more rallies were reported nationwide
in January.

“They’ve already killed two people who were protesting,
using their Constitutional rights,” Martin said. “We want them to be the last
two people killed over this.”

Various reports indicate 32 people died in ICE custody in
2025, more people than in the previous 20 years combined. Several house members
on the Committee of Homeland Security recently sent DHS Secretary Kristi Noem a
letter citing 53 deaths of people in ICE or Customs and Border Protection
custody since she took the role as secretary.

Last September, the U.S. Supreme Court granted the Trump
administration’s request&nbsp;to lift a temporary restraining order, which
allowed ICE to conduct “roving patrols” in California. Stephanie Pfannenstiel
said that was one reason she attended Saturday’s protest in Great Bend.

“The United States Supreme Court overturned a ruling out of
California,” she said. “The end result of that is the Supreme Court has ruled
it is okay to detain people based on race, language spoken, or the type of
employment you do.”

Pfannenstiel also expressed concern about hundreds of
alleged court-order violations by ICE agents, and the potential arrest and detainment
of immigrants attempting to attend hearings to retain their protected legal
status.

“I’m also concerned about talk from the executive branch
about using ICE as security for elections being present at polling places in
2026,” said Pfannenstiel.

Last week, Steve Bannon, a former advisor to President
Trump, said, ‘You’re damn right we’re going to have ICE surround the polls come
November.’ White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she has not heard
the president consider the option but also did not rule it out.

In 2026, the American Discovery Trail Society (ADTS) celebrates the outdoors and 250 years of our independence with the&nbsp;American Discovery&nbsp;250 Relay— a 6,800-mile journey along the entire American Discovery Trail from California to Delaware, starting in July and ending around Thanksgiving. The ADTS invites all to join in the celebration by participating for a day or more in a relay, attending one of over 100 local events, or sharing your story of personal growth and adventure. Together, we commemorate America’s past and shape our future.&nbsp;

The ADT route in Kansas is 575 miles. While on the ADT in Kansas, you will walk in the footsteps of the pioneers, the Great Plains Indian tribes, and many a western hero or bandit. You will see unique geological formations, follow rivers, view the gorgeous Flint Hills and Smoky Hills, and watch birds at the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge. Most of the route through the Sunflower State is on paved or gravel back roads. The American Discovery Trail generally follows the Santa Fe National Historic Trail for much of the way. The trail includes a 143-mile stretch from McPherson to Great Bend, then to Kinsley.

Interested participants or teams are asked to register at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://discoverytrail.org/america-250-relay">discoverytrail.org/america-250-relay</a>. Organizers will work with registrants on their relay destinations closer to the start of the event. Runners, cyclists, hikers, wheelchair users and horseback riders are all encouraged to take part. Great Bend Wrestling at the 42nd Annual Rose Hill Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The “Dark Side” defense carried Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks to a Lombardi Trophy.

Devon Witherspoon, Derick Hall, Byron Murphy and the rest of Mike Macdonald’s ferocious unit pummeled Drake Maye, and the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 on Sunday to win the franchise’s second Super Bowl.

“We never waver, man. We believe in each other. We love each other, and now we’re world champions," Macdonald said.

Darnold&nbsp;threw a touchdown pass&nbsp;to AJ Barner, Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards and Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record by making all five of his field-goal tries.

“To do this with this team, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Darnold said. “So proud of our guys, our defense. I mean, I can’t say enough great things about our defense, our special teams.”

Walker became the first running back to win the Super Bowl MVP award since Hall of Famer Terrell Davis did it with Denver 28 years ago.

Uchenna Nwosu punctuated a punishing defensive performance by&nbsp;snagging Maye’s pass in the air&nbsp;after Witherspoon hit his arm and running it back 45 yards for a pick-6.

"We went through a lot, but we believed," Witherspoon said. "All of you all doubters out there who said all that other stuff, you all don’t know what’s going on in this building. We’re one of one over here.”

Seattle won its first Super Bowl a dozen years ago behind its “Legion of Boom” defense, then was denied a repeat when New England's&nbsp;Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson&nbsp;at the goal line. The Seahawks hadn't been back to the Super Bowl since.

Darnold become the first quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft class to win a Super Bowl, ahead of Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson.

Labeled a bust, dumped by two teams and considered expendable by two others, Darnold proved his doubters wrong while helping the Seahawks go 17-3.

After leading the NFL with 20 turnovers in the regular season, Darnold didn’t have any in three playoff games. He wasn’t particularly sharp against a solid Patriots defense but protected the ball and made enough plays, finishing 19 of 38 for 202 yards.

“I know we won the Super Bowl, but we could have been a little bit better on offense, but I don’t care about that right now,” Darnold said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, man. I’m just so happy for the guys in the locker room and the coaches that put in so much effort throughout the whole season.”

The Seahawks sacked Maye six times, including two apiece by Hall and Murphy.&nbsp;Hall’s strip-sack&nbsp;late in the third quarter set up a short field and Darnold connected with Barner on 16-yard scoring toss to make it 19-0.

Julian Love’s interception&nbsp;set up another field goal that made it 22-7 with 5:35 left.

The Patriots (17-4) punted on the first eight drives, excluding a kneel-down to end the first half.

“Just reminding them that we’re 307 days into what hopefully is a long, successful relationship and program, and it's OK to be disappointed,” New England coach Mike Vrabel said.

Down 19-0, Maye and the Patriots' offense finally got going. He hit Mack Hollins over the middle in traffic for 24 yards and then lofted a perfect 35-yard TD pass to Hollins down the left side to cut the deficit to 19-7.

Tom Brady once led Bill Belichick’s Patriots to the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, when New England rallied from a 28-3 deficit against Atlanta for a 34-28 overtime victory.

But Maye, who was runner-up to Matthew Stafford for the&nbsp;AP NFL MVP award&nbsp;in the closest race in two decades, didn’t come close. He had a chance to narrow the gap, but his ill-advised pass into triple coverage was picked by Love and the Patriots trailed by 15 when they got the ball back with 5:35 left. Maye said after the game that he&nbsp;had a pain-relieving injection in his right shoulder, which he injured in the AFC championship win at Denver, but said it didn't affect his play.

Then came Nwosu’s touchdown, a fitting way to cap an overwhelming effort by the NFL’s stingiest defense.

“Definitely hurts. They played better than us tonight,” Maye said.

Maye’s 7-yard TD pass to Rhamondre Stevenson late in the game only made the margin smaller.

The Seahawks took a 3-0 lead on Myers’ 33-yard field goal on the game’s opening drive. Myers connected from 39 and 41 yards to extend the lead to 9-0 at halftime. He was good from 41 on Seattle’s first drive of the third quarter to make it 12-0.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez made two outstanding plays to prevent potential touchdowns in the second quarter. He raced back and leaped in the air to slap away a deep pass to Rashid Shaheed that could have been a 76-yard TD.

On Seattle’s last drive in the first half, Gonzalez knocked down a pass to All-Pro wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba that would have been a 23-yard TD.

Rylie Mills&nbsp;pushed left guard Jared Wilson into Maye&nbsp;and took both of them down on one of Seattle’s sacks.

Bad Bunny headlined a visually stunning&nbsp;halftime performance&nbsp;that also featured appearances by Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. The Grammy-winning Puerto Rican artist entirely in Spanish.

The Patriots failed to win the franchise’s seventh Super Bowl, which would have set an NFL record. They’re tied with the Steelers with six championships.

Vrabel, the AP NFL Coach of the Year, was aiming to become the fifth person to win a Super Bowl as a player and head coach and the first to do both with the same team.

The 23-year-old Maye became the second-youngest QB to start a Super Bowl, but couldn't become the youngest to win it. Ben Roethlisberger still holds that mark.

MILAN (AP) — Amber Glenn wins Olympic gold in the team event but faces backlash over her political and LGBTQ+ comments. On the same day, Canadian artist Seb McKinnon objects to her use of his song "The Return" in her free skate. McKinnon claims Glenn used the song without permission, sparking a copyright debate. Figure skaters must obtain permission for music, but the process is complex. Copyright issues have increased since the International Skating Union allowed vocals in 2014. They're exchanging stony glances and rejecting high-fives. Then, after each match, they're emerging in good spirits, dismissing their discord as normal. Stress levels are rising at the Olympic Ice Stadium with the semifinals in sight. The field's three married couples told The Associated Press that good communication is the key to success. Couples Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Canada and Yannick Schwaller and Briar Schwaller-Hürlimann of Switzerland have even brought their young children to the Olympics. CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Lindsey Vonn's quest for an Olympic gold at age 41 came after years of building her legacy on a combination of perseverance, risk and staying true to herself. She held close to all three in the run-up to the 2026 Winter Games. She leaned into it when she stepped into the starting gate for the women's downhill in Cortina. Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into her run after clipping a gate, which is always part of the risk when you are searching for every ounce of speed you can get.

LIVIGNO, Italy (AP) — Mathilde Gremaud has successfully defended her Olympic freeski slopestyle title and denied Eileen Gu a gold medal for a second straight Winter Games. Gremaud won Monday’s final with a score of 86.96 from her best of three jumps. Gu again took silver behind her Swiss rival with a best jump of 86.58. Gu, who was born in America but competes for China, became a global star at the 2022 Beijing Games where she won three medals, including gold in freeski halfpipe and big air. Canada’s Megan Oldham claimed bronze.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dillon Battie scored 19 points and Karon Boyd added a double-double to help Wichita State defeat Tulane 75-61 on Sunday.

Battie added nine rebounds and three steals for the Shockers (15-9, 7-4 American Conference). Boyd had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Rowan Brumbaugh finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals to pace the Green Wave (13-10, 4-6). Tyler Ringgold added 13 points.

No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks host No. 1 Arizona Wildcats

A win is a win in the Jayhawk Conference, especially on the road, and the Barton Community College men's basketball team found a way Saturday afternoon at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena, outlasting Pratt Community College 85–78 in overtime.

Barton appeared poised to take control early, building an eight-point cushion five minutes into the contest. The Beavers pulled back to tie in the ensuing minutes, but consecutive&nbsp;Blake Rucker&nbsp;and&nbsp;Brian Sullivan, Jr.&nbsp;three-pointers pushed the Cougars back in front until late in the half. After Pratt grabbed its first lead since the opening minutes with 34 seconds left,&nbsp;Sebastian Muchitsch&nbsp;answered with an old-fashioned three-point play, converting a layup with five seconds remaining before adding the go-ahead free throw to send Barton into the break leading 41–40.

Muchitsch opened the second half by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers, later helping spark another six-point burst as the Cougars rebuilt separation. Behind a balanced attack and consistent pressure, Barton eventually pushed the gap to its largest of nine at 67–58 on a&nbsp;Noah Williams&nbsp;three-pointer with 7:55 left. Pratt refused to fold, chipping away possession by possession and leaning on timely perimeter shooting to erase the deficit. Barton still clung to a 73–70 edge inside the final two minutes, but the Beavers countered with back-to-back three-pointers to swing in front 76–73 with 1:01 remaining.

Needing an answer, the Cougars got it at the rim as&nbsp;Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;finished a tying layup with 22 seconds left. Pratt had a chance to steal it in the closing seconds, but a late turnover sent the game to overtime tied 76–76.

In the extra period, Barton delivered the final blow. Trailing briefly and playing without Muchitsch after he fouled out at the 3:05 mark, the Cougars clamped down defensively and closed the final 2:54 on an 8–0 run.&nbsp;Jayden Ramirez&nbsp;knocked down a pair at the line, Williams added three more free throws in the final minute, and Rucker capped it at the stripe sealing Barton's fourth straight victory at Lesh Arena.

Barton concludes its two-game road stretch improving to 11–7 in Jayhawk Conference play and 16–8 overall. Pratt drops its fourth consecutive, falling to 3–15 in the Jayhawk and 6–17 on the season.

The Cougars put their four-game win streak to the test on Wednesday, returning home hosting Fort Hays Tech Northwest in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on "Pink Out Night." The Tigers previously erased a 15-point deficit on December 9 in Goodland to stun the then-No. 20 Cougars, setting the stage for a timely rematch at Fleske Fieldhouse.

Muchitsch led Barton with 22 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season, while Williams delivered an efficient 20-point, nine-rebound performance.&nbsp;Majok Chuol&nbsp;added nine points and five boards, with Rodriguez finishing with nine points and two assists, including the game-tying basket in the final minute of regulation. Ramirez also scored nine, doing much of his damage at the free throw line, while Sullivan, Jr. chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.&nbsp;Jon Byrd&nbsp;directed the offense with a team-high four assists.

Hunter Vaughn led Pratt with 20 points, Keletigui "Kele" Kane dropped 4-of-8 behind the arc in a double-double 16 points and 12 rebound effort. Held scoreless in the second half, Galvin Luketa finished with 14 points while Muna Godswill added 11 points and 7 rebounds

Barton men survive late scare to win in overtime at Pratt 

The Barton Community College women's basketball team erased a sub-par first half by owning the final nineteen minutes Saturday at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena, rolling past host Pratt Community College 67–43.

Barton got off to a slow start, trailing by four through the opening six minutes before stringing together six straight points. Pratt closed the opening quarter with the final four points to take a 13–11 lead, but the Beavers would not score for the next five minutes. The Cougars, however, struggled to fully capitalize during the drought, managing just six points before finally finding a spark with a brief burst capped by&nbsp;Eva Clements' three-pointer as part of a 13–2 stretch.

As they did to close the first quarter, Pratt again finished the half with the final four points, trimming Barton's advantage to 24–19 at the break.

Pratt opened the third quarter with another four straight points to extend an 8–0 run before&nbsp;Regina Donanu&nbsp;stopped the stretch on a pair of free throws. The Beavers answered with a three-pointer to knot the game at 26–26 with 7:33 left in the period, but from there it was all Barton. The Cougars responded with free throws to regain the lead, then used a Donanu jumper and a&nbsp;Kodi Greer&nbsp;scoring burst to seize full control. Barton piled up a 21-point third quarter to build a 47–32 edge heading into the fourth.

Pratt never got closer than fourteen in the final period, and after the Beavers cut it to 57–43 with 3:04 remaining, Barton slammed the door by closing the contest with the game's final ten points.

The Cougars improve to 8–10 in Jayhawk Conference play and 10–14 overall, while Pratt's fourteenth straight loss drops the Beavers to 2–16 in league action and 6–17 on the season. Barton returns home Wednesday for "Pink Out Night," hosting Fort Hays Tech Northwest in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Donanu posted her first collegiate double-double and flirted with a triple-double, pouring in a game-high 20 points while adding 10 rebounds and eight assists, along with a pair of steals.

Mary Akinde&nbsp;recorded her ninth double-double of the season and third straight, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Greer provided a first-half spark off the bench and later helped ignite the decisive third-quarter separation, finishing with 10 points and three assists.&nbsp;Mersadie Spray&nbsp;added 10 points and six rebounds, while Clements chipped in seven points and five rebounds.&nbsp;Alaina Eck&nbsp;finished with eight points, and&nbsp;Keyona Hall&nbsp;rounded out the scoring with two points.

Kalani Brock led Pratt with 11 points as Daniella Zamora grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds with 7 points.

Barton women flip the script after halftime to pull away at Pratt

WASHINGTON (AP) — A leading U.S. health official on Sunday urged people to get inoculated against the measles at a time of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-south-carolina-utah-arizona-845643cd1342f1ce2ea01d11b74ee77b">outbreaks across several states</a>&nbsp;and as the United States is at risk of losing its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-measles-elimination-mexico-6f0bc8f7ef31d5ef82492e42ccb38e47">measles elimination status</a>.

“Take the vaccine, please,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dr-oz-mehmet-things-to-know-trump-be62594d66e07b9544e48ddf9febf7bf">Dr. Mehmet Oz</a>, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator whose boss has raised&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-outbreak-rfk-jr-messaging-criticism-vaccine-1a2cbdc14eb0c256695fdfac00cbfb6d?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">suspicion about the safety and importance of vaccines</a>. “We have a solution for our problem.”

Oz, a heart surgeon, defended some recently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/childhood-vaccine-schedule-trump-rfk-measles-flu-b31b4d6815d4395d72745f3a18f2263c">revised federal vaccine recommendations</a>&nbsp;as well as past comments from President Donald Trump and the nation's health chief, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., about the efficacy of vaccines. From Oz, there was a clear message on the measles.

“Not all illnesses are equally dangerous and not all people are equally susceptible to those illnesses,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “But measles is one you should get your vaccine.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-south-carolina-utah-arizona-845643cd1342f1ce2ea01d11b74ee77b">An outbreak</a>&nbsp;in South Carolina in the hundreds has surpassed the recorded case count in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-vaccine-outbreak-texas-mmr-0744a165cfb354022092a1f158c698b0">Texas’ 2025 outbreak</a>, and there is also one on the Utah-Arizona border. Multiple other states have had confirmed cases this year. The outbreaks have mostly impacted children and have come as infectious disease experts warn that rising public distrust of vaccines generally may be contributing to the spread of a disease once declared eradicated by public health officials.

Asked in the television interview whether people should fear the measles, Oz replied, “Oh, for sure.” He said Medicare and Medicaid will continue to cover the measles vaccine as part of the insurance programs.

“There will never be a barrier to Americans get access to the measles vaccine. And it is part of the core schedule,” Oz said.

But Oz also said “we have advocated for measles vaccines all along” and that Kennedy “has been on the very front of this.”
