Nancy Sundahl’s dedication to local organizations is so well known that Kevin, her husband of 52 years, joked, "A bumper sticker for her would be: ‘This car stops at all meetings.’"

It is for this dedication that the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce has announced Sundahl as the 2025 Citizen of the Year, honoring her career-long commitment to the community.

She was recognized alongside Business of the Year Stueder Contractors Inc., Legacy Award recipient Mark Calcara and NextGen Leader of the Year Cody Harris during the chamber’s 104th annual awards banquet Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Great Bend Events Center.

The award is the chamber’s highest individual honor, recognizing those who give their time and talent to enrich the local culture. Sundahl was selected based on her leadership and her role as a professional and social role model.

The Citizen of the Year Award celebrates individuals who lead by example. According to the chamber, nominees are evaluated on their commitment to community impact and their ability to inspire others through service.

A native of Great Bend, Sundahl graduated from Great Bend High School, Barton Community College and Kansas State University. She married Kevin in 1973 after the pair met as members

of the inaugural student classes at BCC. At the college, she was a cheerleader and he played basketball.

Nancy earned her degree in education and began her career as a history teacher and cheerleader sponsor at Claflin High School.

"She took some bus trips with the cheerleaders to wherever they went," Kevin said. "She was the sponsor for three years."

After marrying following their senior year of college, the couple moved to Great Bend. While Nancy taught in Claflin, Kevin worked in home construction for her father.

"I worked for one year and one day. That’s the last time I do construction," Kevin recalled. He later transitioned into coaching at Barton Community College and then property appraising.

Sundahl began her professional career teaching social sciences and cheerleading sponsor at Claflin High School. In 1985, she transitioned to a career in the beauty industry with Mary Kay Inc., which she said provided the flexibility to increase her involvement in family and community activities. She has also assisted her husband in his private appraisal business.

Her civic record includes more than 40 years with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and 50-year memberships in both PEO and Beta Sigma Phi-Xi Delta Upsilon. Sundahl’s leadership roles include the Great Bend High School Booster Club, the USD 428 Board of Education, president of Emergency Aid, and secretary-treasurer of the Barton County Association of Churches. She has served as a chamber ambassador and spent a stint working in the chamber office.

She currently serves on the BCC Foundation Board and is a member of the Barton County 100 Who Care committee. An active member of Prince of Peace Parish, Sundahl serves as a lector, eucharistic minister and volunteer at Holy Family School.

She and Kevin have three sons - Shane, Kris and Lukas - and seven grandchildren.

Her son, Kris, remembers his mother balancing community roles with the responsibilities of raising three active sons. Despite her schedule, she rarely missed a football, basketball or baseball game.

"She set an example for us of how to be involved in the community, but then still be there for your family," Kris said. "I don't think she ever missed any of our activities ... even with grandkids now, she’s very supportive."

Kris recalled his mother taking him along to deliver Meals on Wheels as a child, an experience that shaped his view on community service.

"We remember her taking us out with her when we did that," Kris said. "It just kind of showed us how important it was ... how it lit up a lot of those individuals' days."

Kris noted that his mother’s hectic schedule might be her way of staying focused.

"Staying involved and busy cuts down on [worrying] for her," Kris said. "She doesn’t have time to think about things ... she’s so involved and busy."

While Kris observed that younger generations sometimes struggle to find time for community involvement, he sees his mother’s lifelong commitment as a blueprint.

"I’m in awe of what she does a lot of times," Kris said. "All the stuff that she does, I can’t imagine being that busy."

Sundahl remains active, often splitting duties with Kevin to follow their grandchildren to events in different towns. Kevin describes her as a "very protective" and "family-oriented" person who stays busy by design.

"She’s done a lot of things," Kevin said, "and she will continue to do things till she expires."

Two years ago, Kris was named the chamber’s Next-Gen Award recipient, but wasn’t going to make it to the banquet. Since the honor was a secret and he didn’t know he was the winner, he was told his mom was getting the award to encourage him to be there.

“Now, it is her turn,” Kris said. “I think this is a very fitting award for her.”

 He&nbsp;represented&nbsp;Kansas House District&nbsp;121&nbsp;since 2017.&nbsp;

“Representative Resman&nbsp;has a decorated history of serving&nbsp;his community, our state, and our country throughout his time in the Army, Kansas National Guard,&nbsp;the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Legislature,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends&nbsp;during this&nbsp;difficult time.&nbsp;

Gov. Kelly orders flags to be flown at half-staff

Twelve student artists from USD 428 have been selected to showcase their work at the Kansas Art Education Association (KAEA) Youth Art Month exhibition in Topeka. Running from Feb. 24 through March 28 at the Topeka &amp; Shawnee County Public Library, the display features top-tier student work from across the state.

This is the third year USD 428 has participated in the program. Students were selected by their instructors based on both artistic excellence and exemplary classroom citizenship.

Award Recognition The district is proud to announce that student Marlowe Beugelsdijk, 6th-grade Lincoln Elementary, has already been named a winner of the "Anne &amp; Bill Bracker 3-D Youth Art Month Award." While her achievement is confirmed, the specific award level (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) will be officially revealed during the artist's reception on March 28.

As judging for various categories occurs at different intervals throughout the month, additional honors for USD 428 students may be announced at a later date.

The 12 participating students represent the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The initiative is led by elementary art teacher Shannon Wedel, with support from fellow art faculty members, Caleb Bartlett (Elementary Art), Pamela Williams (Great Bend Middle School), Sergio Ramirez, and Anna Popp (Great Bend High School).

USD 428 student artists represent Great Bend in statewide Youth Art Month display

The Great Bend City Council will consider several items
during tonight’s meeting at City Hall. The consent agenda will include fire
department township contracts with Liberty, Buffalo, Great Bend, and South Bend,
and also a street closure on Lakin Avenue from Main Street to Williams Street
on June 5 from 4-8 p.m. as part of Rocky Mountain Race Week.

The council will also consider updates to the city’s golf
cart ordinance. Recommendations include limiting golf car access on
higher-traffic corridors to enhance public safety. The revised proposal would
prohibit golf carts on any state or federal highways, connecting link, and specified
arterial streets within the city, including Broadway east of Patton, 24th
Street McKinley, Harrison Street south of 24th Street, Washington
Avenue, and Patton Road north of 10th Street. Operation would be permitted
only on streets with a posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less. The ordinance
will also include various registration requirements, including a $30
registration fee.

The council will also consider approving a pavement
management plan, a contract with JEO consulting for the Airport Lift Station
Rehabilitation project, and a $32,000 city employee compensation study with Evergreen
Solutions LLC.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY— Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend crash and fire.

According to the Ellsworth County Sheriff, the late Saturday evening call about a vehicle on fire in the 2500 Block of Avenue T resulted in the arrest of a Kansas man for leaving the scene and failing to report a motor vehicle accident. Additional charges of illegal tag, no proof of liability insurance and Interference / Obstruction are pending.

As it turned out, the driver of the burning vehicle struck a concrete guardrail on a County bridge.&nbsp; The vehicle went flying for quite some  distance, and then landed on its wheels about 200 feet west of the point of impact and caught fire.

There was  significant damage to both the bridge and vehicle.  The driver was located about 1/2 mile west of the accident scene, watching emergency crews work to extinguish the blaze.

The sheriff office thanked the Marquette Fire and EMS crews, along with the McPherson Fire Department, who were sending additional resources out to the location to help us look for "possible" injured persons from this crash.

The sheriff's office reminded, "The Bottom Line here, if you crash your car....you call the Law.....because that is the law."

Sheriff: Kansas driver arrested after he left a crash and fire

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Sunday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by&nbsp; Mason Edward Smith, 19, Minneapolis, was westbound on Interstate 70 two miles northwest of Salina. The Toyota rear-ended a 2014 Jeep Cherokee driven by Sara Kay&nbsp;Wellbrock, 32, Russell, who lost control of the vehicle as she was merging onto westbound Interstate 70 from the northbound Interstate 135 on ramp. Then a 2008 Ford F350 driven by&nbsp; Michael Alan&nbsp; Rider, 24, Malvern, Arkansas, rear-ended the Toyota.

EMS transported&nbsp;Wellbrock to Salina Regional Health Center. Smith and Rider were not injured. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP. The KHP temporarily shut down westbound I-70 following the crash.

Kansas woman hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash

The
drought monitor, as of Tuesday, February 24th, indicates a slight
deterioration from last week in extreme Northwest Kansas and along the Oklahoma
border with the most significant decrease (moderate drought with a touch of
extreme) in extreme Southeast Kansas.&nbsp;
Our area is in good shape.&nbsp; The
six to ten day forecast (March 3 to 7) indicates a 70 to 80% chance of likely
above normal for temperatures and a 50 to 60% of likely above normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day forecast indicates
(March 5 to 11) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of likely above normal for temperatures
and a 40 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.

Conserving
groundwater (water period) has become an increasing focus for agriculture in
Kansas over the last several decades with declining aquifers and intense, more
frequent drought conditions.&nbsp; In Topeka,
the legislature has upped the original $20 million to $60 million.&nbsp; It’s a focus of state and local
governments/agencies.&nbsp; We know we simply
must use less water and sustainably manage our water resources while maintain
crop and livestock production.&nbsp; Today,
how can crop rotations and variety/hybrid selection help conserve water.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A
diverse crop rotation provides several major benefits.&nbsp; It helps manage and control pest
pressure.&nbsp; Transitioning to reduced
tillage and hopefully no-tillage or strip tillage can be a challenge when
managing residue which is made easier when a rotation includes lower residue
crops.&nbsp; You can more effectively mine
soil nutrients when varying root systems.&nbsp;
All of these benefits better utilize soil water.&nbsp; The challenge is that where aquifer decline
is the most severe, is also where a diverse crop rotation (trying to include
broadleaves for example) is hardest.&nbsp; As
you move east from the Colorado border, rotational options increase provided
you have ready markets.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It
would create water savings with center pivot irrigation to rotate more often
with wheat, grain sorghum, and if soil conditions permit – soybeans.&nbsp; Producers know this, however, even with the
significantly higher costs of production, corn is still the best option
especially with the feedlot industry.&nbsp;
Planting cream/white sorghums which make acceptable cattle feed would
help and produce acceptable yields while using less water.&nbsp; It would take some effort for feedyards to
use it but it’s not a big challenge.&nbsp;
Wheat would also use less water and is acceptable feed.&nbsp; However, and intensive management units are
formed, they have been quite successful in Northwest Kansas for some time,
these become more viable options.&nbsp; Yields
may be lower and prices lower, but input costs are also lower.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Split
pivots with crops having different peak water usage requirements.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
even under irrigation, selecting earlier maturing varieties would use less
water with a shorter vegetative stage while producing acceptable yields.&nbsp; And, in conjunction with feedyards, use more
silage from corn to various summer feed crops.

The Wildcats are 9-8 in home games. Kansas State allows 80.9 points to opponents and has been outscored by 1.4 points per game.

The Mountaineers have gone 8-8 against Big 12 opponents. West Virginia ranks second in the Big 12 giving up 64.7 points while holding opponents to 41.6% shooting.

Kansas State averages 9.5 made 3-pointers per game, 1.9 more made shots than the 7.6 per game West Virginia gives up. West Virginia averages 7.9 made 3-pointers per game this season, 0.1 fewer makes per game than Kansas State gives up.

The teams play for the second time in conference play this season. West Virginia won the last meeting 59-54 on Jan. 28. Honor Huff scored 17 points to help lead the Mountaineers to the win.

TOP PERFORMERS: Nate Johnson is averaging 12.1 points, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals for the Wildcats. Haggerty is averaging 23.3 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 49.5% over the past 10 games.

BOTTOM LINE: No. 14 Kansas visits Arizona State after Darryn Peterson scored 24 points in Kansas' 84-61 loss to the Arizona Wildcats.

The Sun Devils have gone 9-5 at home. Arizona State is 7-8 in games decided by 10 or more points.

The Jayhawks are 11-5 against Big 12 opponents. Kansas is ninth in college basketball with 26.9 defensive rebounds per game led by Flory Bidunga averaging 6.2.

Arizona State's average of 7.6 made 3-pointers per game this season is only 0.5 fewer made shots on average than the 8.1 per game Kansas allows. Kansas has shot at a 46.4% clip from the field this season, 0.4 percentage points higher than the 46.0% shooting opponents of Arizona State have averaged.

The Sun Devils and Jayhawks match up Tuesday for the first time in conference play this season.

TOP PERFORMERS: Moe Odum averages 2.8 made 3-pointers per game for the Sun Devils, scoring 17.1 points while shooting 38.7% from beyond the arc. Massamba Diop is averaging 13.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks over the past 10 games.

Tre White is scoring 14.0 points per game and averaging 6.6 rebounds for the Jayhawks. Peterson is averaging 2.1 made 3-pointers over the last 10 games.

Arizona State hosts Peterson and No. 14 Kansas

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Kenyon Giles scored 28 points and Wichita State cruised to an 84-67 victory over UTSA on Sunday night.

Giles went 11 of 27 from the field (6 for 15 from 3-point range) for the Shockers (20-10, 12-5 American Conference). Dillon Battie added 13 points and six rebounds. Will Berg scored 10.

Jamir Simpson and Baboucarr Njie both finished with 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Roadrunners (5-24, 1-16) in a fourth straight loss. Daniel Akitoby pitched in with 16 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Kenyon Giles scores 28 to lead Wichita State over UTSA 84-67

The president of Iran’s soccer federation says he does not know if the national team can play World Cup matches in the United States following the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment of his country. Mehdi Taj tells sports portal Varzesh3, “What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope.” Taj was speaking as Iran traded strikes with Israel as part of a widening war prompted by the bombardment. Iran has been drawn in Group G at the World Cup and is scheduled to play two games in Inglewood, California, and another in Seattle.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tyler Reddick became the first driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to win the first three races of the season with a victory Sunday at the Circuit of Americas. Driving a Toyota co-owned by Michael Jordan, Reddick won the season-opening Daytona 500 and a week later at Atlanta, then won from the pole in the first road course race of the year. Reddick held off hard-charging Shane van Gisbergen, the Trackhouse driver and the series’ dominate road driver, over the final 20 laps. Jordan was with Reddick’s 23XI pit crew exchanging high fives as Reddick crossed the finish line. Van Gisbergen lost his bid for a record-tying sixth consecutive road win. Reddick has 11th career victories, also winning at COTA in 2023.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Nico Echavarria has won the Cognizant Classic after a meltdown by Shane Lowry on the closing stretch at PGA National. Echavarria was three shots back with three holes to play but ended up with a two-shot victory over Lowry on Sunday. The 31-year-old from Colombia shot a 5-under 66 to finish at 17-under 267. It was the third PGA Tour victory and first in the United States for Echavarria, who is heading to the Masters for a second time. Lowry hit his tee shot on the par-4 16th hole into the water, leading to double bogey, and did the same thing on the par-3 17th.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings have fired coach Jim Hiller after losing five of their past six games and falling out of playoff position. D.J. Smith was named the interim replacement for the rest of the season on Sunday in the first coaching change by general manager Ken Holland, who kept Hiller behind the bench when he took over the front office last May. Hiller was in just his second full season in the charge of the Kings, who looked lifeless in an 8-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder has died in a single-car crash. He was 23. The Colorado State Patrol says Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla when he lost control on a curve and hit a guardrail. The car struck an electrical line pole and rolled down an embankment. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene in Boulder County. The Colorado State Patrol says a preliminary investigation “shows that speed is suspected as a factor.” Colorado coach Deion Sanders says Ponder was one of his favorites. He says Ponder was loved and respected.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — USC says Chad Baker-Mazara is no longer part of its men’s basketball program. The team released a short statement that provided no explanation. Baker-Mazara played Saturday in a loss to No. 12 Nebraska and scored 14 points in the first half. He fell hard near the baseline and didn't return after playing three minutes in the second half. CARDIFF, Wales (AP) — FIFA president Gianni Infantino has raised the prospect of red cards being shown to players who cover their mouths when confronting opponents. The issue has been highlighted in recent weeks after Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior said he was racially insulted by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during a Champions League match. Prestianni, who denies the allegations, had approached Vinicius while covering his mouth with his jersey during Madrid’s 1-0 win in the first leg of the playoff. He was provisionally suspended for the second leg while an investigation was being carried out.

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama was surprised. His San Antonio Spurs, who were untouchable in February, were unsteady to start March. San Antonio didn’t respond well to the New York Knicks’ defensive pressure Sunday and had its 11-game winning streak snapped with a 114-89 loss. Wembanyama expected the Spurs to stand up better at Madison Square Garden, but instead never recovered from the Knicks’ 26-2 run in the first half. The Spurs were 11-0 in February. They became the first team in NBA history to go unbeaten and score at least 110 points in every game while playing at least 10 in a month.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone left his team's game at the Pittsburgh Penguins because of an undisclosed injury. Kris Letang gave Stone a seemingly harmless shove to the left arm with his stick in the neutral zone late in the first period. Stone grimaced in pain, went down to one knee and skated off. The 33-year-old winger has a history of injuries sidelining him throughout his NHL career over the past decade-plus. Stone is the Golden Knights' second-leading scorer with 60 points in 42 games. He just helped Canada reach the final at the Olympics before losing to the U.S. in overtime.

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Beginning Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field with a 13–5 run-rule victory, the Barton Community College softball team celebrated a milestone win before watching a four-run lead disappear in a 6–5 setback to Northeastern Junior College in the nightcap.

The opener marked career victory No. 100 for fourth-year Head Coach Carson DuBose, powered by an offensive surge that saw the Cougars score in four of five at-bats and pile up eight runs over the final two innings. But in game two, a five-run sixth by the Plainswomen, capped by Brodie Wilcoxen's three-run blast, flipped the script and forced Barton to settle for the split.

The split moves Barton to 6-8 overall while Northeastern departs Great Bend at 4-8. The Cougars close their three-date homestand Monday hosting Division II No. 18 Cowley College at 1:00 p.m. before opening conference play Wednesday at Fort Hays Tech Northwest.

Offensively, three Cougars produced four hits apiece across the twinbill as Barton collected 23 total hits.&nbsp;Carly Erpelding&nbsp;drove in four runs on the day, while&nbsp;Morgan Thatcher&nbsp;matched that total in RBI behind her first collegiate triple and later a double.&nbsp;Peyton McCormick&nbsp;and&nbsp;Karter Alvord&nbsp;each added a pair of runs driven in.&nbsp;Ellie Crawford&nbsp;picked up her first collegiate pitching victory in relief, and&nbsp;Shaylee Spears&nbsp;recorded her first career hit with a fourth-inning double in game two.

Game One – Barton 13, Northeastern 5 (5 innings)Laney Wood&nbsp;ignited the offense from the top of the lineup with a pair of hits, helping Barton plate three in the opening frame capitalizing on a Northeastern miscue and an RBI double by McCormick.

The Plainswomen answered with four runs in the second on two walks, an RBI single by Reina Roberts, and a Barton error to chase starter&nbsp;Charley Wheeler. Crawford entered in relief, induced a groundout that allowed one inherited runner to score, then settled in by striking out three over her 3.2 innings of work while scattering just two hits.

With Crawford steady in the circle, the Cougar offense found its rhythm, erupting for ten runs over the final three innings.

Erpelding's leadoff double in the third following&nbsp;Hailey Horton's single helped produce two runs, with McCormick delivering an RBI single and Alvord driving in another on a groundout.

A four-run fourth expanded the margin as&nbsp;Kahli Fields&nbsp;worked a leadoff walk, Wood reached again, and back-to-back two-RBI doubles from&nbsp;Mollie Steiner&nbsp;and Erpelding pushed the lead to 9-4.

After Northeastern scratched across a fifth-inning run on consecutive doubles by Kelsi Jurczewsky and Addison Steele, Barton quickly closed the door. Wood was hit by a pitch and Steiner walked to set the stage for Erpelding and Horton RBI singles. Following McCormick's third hit to load the bases and Thatcher's sacrifice fly, Alvord roped a double deep down the right-field line to bring home the run-rule clincher in walk-off fashion.

Crawford earned her first collegiate victory, while Northeastern's Reyes absorbed the loss allowing six earned runs in three innings.

Game Two – Northeastern 6, Barton 5Barton struck first in the nightcap as Wood reached on an error and later scored on Erpelding's sacrifice fly.

Northeastern responded in the second, using a Marisa Reyes single and America Griffin's RBI double to even the contest.

The Cougars appeared to seize control in the third. Steiner drew a walk, Horton reached, and McCormick's pressure forced an error that plated a run. One batter later, Thatcher delivered a towering triple to right-center, clearing the bases and stretching the advantage to 4-1.

Spears' leadoff double in the fourth marked her first collegiate hit, and moments later she alertly raced home on Wood's stolen-base attempt to extend the lead to 5-1.

Barton carried that four-run cushion into the sixth before Northeastern mounted its decisive rally. A walk and two hits opened the frame, followed by an infield error that allowed another run to score. Wilcoxen then provided the decisive swing, launching a three-run home run to put the Plainswomen in front 6-5.

The Cougars threatened late. Erpelding worked a two-out walk in the sixth but was stranded. In the seventh, McCormick led off with a hit and Thatcher reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt. An intentional walk to Alvord loaded the bases with one out.

But Northeastern's defense preserved the comeback. Mikeayla Llamas, who had earlier robbed Wood at the fence, made a running grab in the gap on Boone's fly ball and fired a strike home to cut down the tying run. A groundout back to the circle sealed the split.

Wheeler took the loss, slipping to 4-3, while Maddie Cline earned the victory in relief.

DuBose notches 100th victory as Barton softball settles for split hosting Northeastern

The No. 25 Barton Community College baseball team extended its winning streak to five games Saturday afternoon, securing a three-game sweep with 2-1 and 9-4 victories over Kansas City Kansas Community College at the KCKCC Baseball Complex.

The doubleheader unfolded in contrasting fashion, as Barton edged out a 2-1 decision in the seven-inning opener before pulling away late in the nightcap, using a multi-run middle inning to create separation in a 9-4 victory.

With the weekend sweep, the Cougars improve to 14-2 on the season while the Blue Devils drop to 5-9 overall. Riding a five-game winning streak, Barton will now turn their focus to Thursday afternoon's Jayhawk Conference opener, hosting Seward County Community College in the first leg of a four-game set with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Jimmy Lawson-Danny Biggs Field.

At the plate,&nbsp;Rhett Winchester&nbsp;sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, finishing 4-for-7 across the twinbill with an RBI and three runs scored.&nbsp;Kyler Horsman&nbsp;added four hits of his own, driving in three runs while accounting for both RBIs in the 2-1 opener.&nbsp;Carter Helm&nbsp;delivered the loudest nightcap performance, going 3-for-5 with a home run and triple while driving in three, falling a double shy of the cycle in the series sweep.

Horsman factored heavily into the outcome, going 3-for-4 with a double for the Cougars lone extra base hit while driving in both runs. Not only a presence at the plate, Horsman (3-0) handled the final two innings on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with a walk to earn his third victory of the season and secure the series win. Starter&nbsp;Braden Hauschel&nbsp;worked the opening two innings permitting one hit with four strikeouts before&nbsp;Landon Haines&nbsp;tossed the next three scoreless frames yielding, three hits, two walks and striking out three.

Game 2 RecapBarton broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run sixth inning and never looked back, finishing off the 9-4 victory to complete the three-game sweep.&nbsp;

After falling behind 2-1 through three innings, the Cougars evened the score in the fifth as&nbsp;Kyle Walker's groundout plated&nbsp;JJ Spafford's leadoff triple. Barton took control in the sixth, sending eight to the plate, sparked by Helm's leadoff solo home run for his fourth of the season.&nbsp;Bruin Sampson&nbsp;followed with a run-scoring groundout before Spafford's sacrifice fly and a Blue Devils wild pitch capped the decisive four run inning.

The Cougars continued to build the separation in the seventh and eighth. Walker opened the seventh with a single and Horsman double ahead of Helm's RBI groundout, while Sampson's leadoff double in the eighth helped set up RBI knocks from Winchester and Horsman to put the finishing touches on the weekend sweep.

Brian Justice&nbsp;took a no-decision behind four innings, allowing two runs before turning it over to the bullpen.&nbsp;Austin Young&nbsp;(2-0) earned the victory in relief, while&nbsp;Jake Field&nbsp;and&nbsp;Drew Koch&nbsp;combined for 3.1 scoreless innings down the stretch.

No. 25 Cougars secure three-game road sweep of Kansas City Kansas

Oksana Masters is the most decorated American Winter Paralympian and is part of a select group of multi-sport athletes who have been competing in both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, having to master different skills to succeed in entirely different disciplines every two years. In the last two decades or so there have been some 120 athletes participating in both the Summer and Winter Paralympics. Masters, who is a double leg amputee, competed in every Paralympics since 2012, earning medals in Para cross-country and Para biathlon in the winter and Para cycling and Para rowing in the summer.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The Qatar soccer federation has postponed all tournaments and matches until further notice amid global tensions following the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. The QFA did not specifically mention the strikes when it announced the postponements on X, adding only that new dates "will be announced in due course.” There are disruptions at Qatar’s Doha airport and Iranian missiles could be seen being intercepted above Doha on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Earlier on Sunday, Asian soccer’s governing body postponed continental club championship playoffs in the Middle East this week.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said on social media that the school is working to try and help a few former players return home from Israel where they are playing professionally. The trio of former Gamecocks — Tiffany Mitchell, Destiny Littleton and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan — are among about a half dozen former WNBA players who are playing basketball in Israel, which along with the United States, launched an attack on Iran on Saturday. Staley wrote that they are working on a plan to get them home.

Texas joined UConn, UCLA and South Carolina as No. 1 seeds in the women’s NCAA Tournament if it began now. The Longhorns replaced Vanderbilt as the fourth top seed in the second reveal by the NCAA basketball selection committee of teams in line for the top 16 seeds Sunday. Texas was a No. 2 seed in the initial reveal on Feb. 14. Undefeated UConn was still the overall No. 1, edging UCLA and South Carolina. Fifteen of the 16 teams from the first reveal were the same with Minnesota being the only new entrant. Ole Miss fell out.

This time it was Hilary Knight’s turn to provide a big laugh in the wake of a weeklong dustup involving the United States women and men’s gold medal-winning hockey teams. Knight, the U.S. women’s captain, along with teammate Megan Keller and men’s team brothers Jack and Quinn Hughes, made an appearance during “Heated Rivalry” star Connor Storrie’s opening monologue on SNL. Knight joked it was going to be only the women, but they decided to invite the men, too. The remark was a reference to a controversy that arose when President Trump invited the men to attend his State of the Union speech. He then joked he'd have to invite the women or risk getting impeached.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United climbs up to third in the Premier League with a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace. Benjamin Sesko’s seventh goal in eight games sealed the win at Old Trafford that moved United above Aston Villa on goal difference. At the other end of the standings Tottenham’s winless run extended to 10 games after a 2-1 loss at Fulham, leaving it mired in a fight to avoid relegation. Nottingham Forest also failed to pull further away from the drop zone after a 2-1 loss to Brighton. League leader Arsenal hosts sixth-place Chelsea later Sunday.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has signed a two-year contract extension through at least the 2028 season. The deal that was announced Sunday includes a club option for 2029. Marmol has been in charge the past four seasons and provides some stability for an organization that is resetting under new president Chaim Bloom. The 39-year-old Marmol led the Cardinals to the National League wild-card round in his first season as manager. But he has failed to return to the playoffs the last three years, and St. Louis was just 78-84 last season.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 7 Florida has closed out an unbeaten February with its ninth consecutive victory. This one was a 111-77 drubbing of 20th-ranked Arkansas that the defending national champion Gators hope will improve their chances of landing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Florida pounded the Razorbacks in the paint, outscored them from long range and clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference title. The Gators then partied on Billy Donovan Court with hats and T-shirts and unveiled a banner commemorating their eighth league crown. Coach Todd Golden called it “just a great night for our program."

SOLDEU, Andorra (AP) — Sofia Goggia has won her second super-G of the season and regained a commanding lead in the race to the World Cup discipline title. The Olympic downhill bronze medallist extended her advantage in the super-G standings to 84 points over runner-up Alice Robinson of New Zealand and 116 over third-placed Emma Aicher of Germany, with two events left. A race win is worth 100 points. Goggia beat Aicher by 0.24 seconds and third-placed Kajsa Vickhoff Lie of Norway by 0.31. Robinson finished 0.94 seconds behind in seventh.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Notre Dame running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price rekindled some fond memories at this week’s NFL’s scouting combine. They shared a room — just as they used to when they were college teammates. Only here, one of college football’s best backfield duos is no longer working in tandem. Instead, they’re here to showcase their own skills and increase their prospects heading into April’s NFL draft. Love and Price might be the highest-rated running backs in this year's draft class. But they're not the only backfield tandem in Indianapolis. So are Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton, two of the most productive runners in Penn State history.

COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a fatal pedestrian accident in Cowley County have released the name of the victim as Kasey Joe Barclay, 32, formerly of Ponca City, Oklahoma, according to Cowley County Undersheriff Christina McDonald.

Just before 7:30p.m. Saturday, the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to an injury accident involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian on US 77 Highway at 242nd Road, according to Undersheriff Christina McDonald.

&nbsp;Deputies determined that a silver Nissan Rogue driven by&nbsp;Stacy Gisick, 62, of Wichita, was&nbsp;northbound on US 77 and struck Barclay who was walking in the roadway. Barclay sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Gisick remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The war in the Middle East spiraled further Monday as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/iran-us-israel-hezbollah-strikes-03-02-2026">Israel and the United States pounded</a>&nbsp;Iran in a campaign that U.S. President Donald Trump said would likely take&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-trump-israel-war-where-things-stand-e3c003aef4479cd179967a63bb1236f4">several weeks</a>. Tehran and its allies hit back against Israel, Gulf states and targets critical to the world’s energy production.

The intensity of the attacks, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-supreme-leader-ayatollah-ali-khamenei-dead-5b13b69b708c4ed38e8f95f5fb41a597">killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei</a>, and the lack of any apparent exit plan set the stage for a prolonged conflict with far-reaching consequences.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-us-dubai-emirates-tourism-attack-b256f514b290c987b3004cc87744f038">Safe havens in the Mideast</a>&nbsp;like Dubai have seen incoming fire; hundreds of thousands of airline passengers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-us-travel-airlines-mideast-flights-93f2559eb57f05989fb1de8fda7f21ec">are stranded around the globe</a>; oil prices&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oil-prices-iran-us-hormuz-tanker-8a6d6fb35c89d9b0db4c4846f290c2c3">shot up</a>; and U.S. allies&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-israel-reactions-03-01-2026-961f288c645f6cbc7fa9d63e0502df36">pledged to help</a>&nbsp;stop Iranian missiles and drones.

With no sign of the conflict abating anytime soon, Trump said operations are likely to last four to five weeks but that he was prepared “to go far longer than that.”

He said U.S. forces were determined to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, wipe out its naval capacity, stop the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon and ensure that Iran cannot continue to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-proxies-us-israel-hezbollah-war-b0f919b657bb33c464f6d943d7142464">support allied groups</a>&nbsp;like Lebanon's Hezbollah, which fired missiles at Israel, drawing retaliatory airstrikes.

"This was our last, best chance to strike -- what we’re doing right now -- and eliminate the intolerable threats posed by this sick and sinister regime,” Trump said.

The chaos of the conflict became apparent when the U.S. military said Kuwait had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-jets-downed-kuwait-friendly-fire-iran-f15-1151e092db4597e93e83c04f3b44bddc">“mistakenly shot down”</a>&nbsp;three American F-15E Strike Eagles while Iran was attacking with aircraft, ballistic missiles, and drones. U.S. Central Command said all six pilots ejected safely and are in stable condition.

As several airstrikes hit Iran’s capital of Tehran, the top security official Ali Larijani vowed on X: “We will not negotiate with the United States.”

The death toll grew on all sides. The Iranian Red Crescent Society said that the U.S.-Israeli operation has killed at least 555 people. In Israel, where several locations were hit by Iranian missiles, 11 people were killed. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group also targeted Israel, which responded with strikes on Lebanon, killing more than two dozen people. Meanwhile, four American troops have been killed, and three people were reported killed in the United Arab Emirates and one each in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iran expands attacks to regional oil infrastructure

With world markets already&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-oil-gold-iran-trump-25fd9bfa1b20549a6cbbdee61b2ea05f">rattled by the fighting</a>, QatarEnergy said it would stop its production of liquefied natural gas, taking one of the world’s top suppliers off the market. It offered no timeline for restoring its production. European natural gas prices surged by 40% in response.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery came under attack from drones, with defenses downing the incoming aircraft, a military spokesman told the state-run Saudi Press Agency. The refinery has a capacity of over half a million barrels of crude oil a day.

Several ships have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-strait-hormuz-us-protests-persian-gulf-db7159d715453977279ab9cfd918e6e4">a fifth of all oil trade passes</a>&nbsp;and where Iran has threatened attacks.

The Gulf state of Qatar said its air force had shot down two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers.

“The attack on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery marks a significant escalation, with Gulf energy infrastructure now squarely in Iran’s sights,” said Torbjorn Soltvedt, an analyst at the risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft. “An extended period of uncertainty lies ahead.”

The region is also a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-israel-us-travel-airlines-mideast-flights-93f2559eb57f05989fb1de8fda7f21ec">hub for air travel</a>, and passengers have been stranded around the world as carriers based in the Gulf grounded flights. Long-haul carriers Etihad and Emirates restarted limited flights Monday.
