The perfect basketball season is an impressive, albeit common
enough feat. The perfect volleyball season – far less common. For the same
school to do both in the same year? It rarely happens. Greg Maxwell coached the
Ellinwood High school volleyball team to a 47-0 record on the way to the Class
2A state championship in November. Now on the basketball sideline, his Lady Eagles
ended the regular season at 22-1. The lone blemish: a 67-59 loss to Ellsworth
on Jan. 26.

“Honestly, when it happened, you could see it,” Maxwell said.
“It was their first loss of the school year. I wouldn’t say it rattled them,
but it got their attention – kind of a reset. We lost to a really good team,
and it was a team that played really well against us, a very well-coached team.
It was a respectable loss on so many levels. I actually came away from it
feeling really good about it.”

Ellinwood has little control over its schedule, so the
Eagles have not defeated any teams in the final rankings of the season, but the
team does have impressive wins against the likes of Class 3A Hoisington (11-9
overall), Medicine Lodge (15-5), two wins over Central Plains (15-8), and two wins
against LaCrosse (13-9). Thirteen of the 22 wins this year have come by at
least 30 points, and several more by at least 20 points. Even on an off night,
Ellinwood has proved it can win. The evidence: a 35-22 win against Central
Plains in the Central Prairie League tournament championship.

“The big difference for us this year is we can score
multiple ways,” Maxwell said. “Last year, we lived and died with the three. Our
defense was mediocre last year. We were still learning the speed of the game.
We were extremely young and we’re still young in some positions, but we can
score in so many ways. In our league championship, we didn’t hit a 3-pointer
and were still able to come away with a win. Last year, there’s no way that
would have happened.”

In hockey, the line change is a crucial part of the game. With
a deep bench of athletes, Maxwell has the ability to substitute all five
players on the court at any time. The result is a tenacious pace that teams
struggle to keep pace with.

That shows up in the stat book with no clear go-to player on
any given night. Senior Julia Schlessiger leads the team at 14.5 points and 7.2
rebounds a game. Sophomore Mette Maxwell is averaging 11 points, 4.6 assists,
and 3.6 steals a night. Sophomore Brynn Widener, who went off for 28 points in
Friday’s win against Otis-Bison, is averaging 10 points a game. Juniors Reece
Stickney and Alyvia Batchman bring a combined 13 points a game.

The Eagles are winning despite a young roster. Schlessiger
and Regan Widener are the only two seniors on the team. The aforementioned
juniors are joined by Addi Stickney and Bennett Jacobs, who combine for four
points a game. A talented sophomore class includes Eleanor Joiner (3.7 ppg),
Ayla Ritchie (3.9 ppg), and Reagan Wirtz (3 ppg). Freshman Avery Panning is
adding 2.3 points a contest.

Ranked No. 2 in the final KBCA rankings of the season,
Ellinwood won a coin flip with Hoxie to take the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A
Smith Center sub-state. The Eagles host Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday at 6 p.m.,
and would host the winner of the No. 8 Smith Center/No. 9 Rawlins County game
on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. No. 4 Medicine Lodge is the other big threat in
Ellinwood’s half of the bracket.

The sub-state semifinal and championship games will be
played at Smith Center High School. The other half of the bracket includes
Hoxie (22-1), Oakley (19-4) and Wichita County (13-8). Ellinwood’s confidence
to win big games cannot be overlooked down the stretch.

“Every time you ask these kids, they talk about their volleyball
confidence and belief,” said Maxwell. “It’s just a championship mindset, game preparation.
These girls are unbelievable in how they prepare and how they view competition.
From the first thing in the morning when I see them at school, to how they
prepare after school, and into actual game time, I love that about them. That
is going to be valuable. It’s going to get exciting here, and it’s going to get
tight for them. That belief you can win is extremely valuable in these moments.”

NEW BUSINESS - RESOLUTION 2026-05: A Resolution Expanding Fire District No. 2, County of Barton, Kansas, to Include the Townships of Fairview, Grant and Wheatland, and the City of Galatia and Amending Resolution 2018-10, Same, Adopted May 14, 2018: -Mr. Patzner will provide details. At a Public Hearing held prior to this Commission meeting, it was detailed that Fire District No. 2 consists of Albion, Eureka, North Homestead, South Homestead, Union Townships and the Cities of Hoisington, Olmitz and Susank. Through the adoption of this proposed Resolution, the District would be expanded to include Fairview, Grant and Wheatland Townships, and the City of Galatia. In keeping with the original Resolution, the Board of Trustees would be expanded to include representatives from the expansion zone.

PROGRAM UPDATE: K-State Extension, Cottonwood District: -Jay Harris, District Director, K-State Extension, Cottonwood District, will present an annual overview. The Cottonwood District proudly serves Barton and Ellis Counties. With offices in Great Bend and Hays, district personnel provide relevant, reliable information related to Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Horticulture, 4-H and Youth Development, Family Life, Healthy Living, and more.

RESOLUTION 2026-06: Placement of Stop Signs at the Intersection of NE 220 Road and NE 10 Avenue, Union Township: -Josh Beckman, County Engineer, will provide details. The proposed Resolution calls for the placement of stop signs at the intersection of NE 220 Road and NE 10 Avenue, Union Township. Safety and engineering personnel find that there is a sight obstruction in the southwest quadrant of the intersection. It is recommended that all vehicles traveling on NE 10 Avenue are to stop for all vehicles traveling on NE 220 Road at said intersection, that stop signs be installed for northbound and southbound traffic traveling on NE 10 Avenue.

NOXIOUS WEED: Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report and Management Plan: -Chris Schartz, County Works Director, will provide details. The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is responsible for laws aiding in the control and management of noxious and invasive weeds in Kansas. The KDA requires Kansas counties to submit an annual Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report as well as a Management Plan.

JUVENILE SERVICES: Fiscal Year 2027 Funding: -Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director, will provide details. The Juvenile Services Department requests approval of the fiscal year 2027 budget. The budget has been prepared based on figures provided by the Kansas Department of Corrections – Juvenile Services.

CENTRAL KANSAS COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS: Fiscal Year 2027 Funding: -Brooke Haulmark, CKCC Director, will provide details. Funding for CKCC is provided through a Kansas Department of Corrections grant. For Fiscal Year 2027, CKCC is allocated $808,438.94 in funding to support seven positions and operational and programming costs. It is noted that the funding serves the entirety of the 20th Judicial District, a five-County area covering 4,015 square miles with staff supervising an average of 237 active clients.

CENTRAL KANSAS COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS: Replacement of Fleet Vehicle: -Ms. Haulmark will present. CKCC is in need of an all-wheel drive vehicle capable of traveling through all areas of the Twentieth Judicial District. There were no comparable vehicles located at local dealerships. It is suggested that the department purchase a 2020 Dodge Durango AWD from the Great Bend Police Department. The vehicle, with just under 33,000 miles, is priced at $20,000.00. Monies are available in the CKCC budget for this planned purchase.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: Formal Extension of the Annual Review of a Conditional Land Use Permit under Resolution 2025-07: -Judy Goreham, Environmental Manager, will provide details. A request is made to extend the deadline for the annual review of certain property as outlined in Resolution 2025-07, adopted on March 4, 2025. It is suggested that the deadline be extended until March 10, 2026, to accommodate the agenda schedule and provide Larry and Sheree Marshall, dba Marshall Towing, time to submit required documentation to assure compliance for the property located at 514 SW 20 Road, said property being in the SE/4, Section 4, Township 20 South, Range 14 West. The property is conditionally approved for the operation of a Salvage Storage Yard.

EXECUTIVE SESSION: -Chairman Duane Reif will present. Any Commissioner may make a motion for the board to recess to executive session at this time as allowed by K.S.A. 75-4319. Any motion must contain the justification for the executive session, the subject matter to be discussed, any individuals in addition to the board who will attend the executive session and the time at which the regular session shall resume.

ANTICIPATED ANNOUNCEMENTS: -County officials may attend the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Ceremony beginning at 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. The event will be held at the Great Bend Events Center, 3111 – 10th, Great Bend, Kansas.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an attempt to block climate-change lawsuits from proceeding in state courts. Exxon Mobil and Suncor Energy are appealing a Colorado ruling allowing such a lawsuit. The suit blames the companies for the harms caused by climate change through their marketing, production and sale of fossil fuels. The plaintiffs charge the companies with violations of various state laws, including consumer protection provisions. The companies argue that climate policy is a purely federal issue, in part because pollution crosses state lines and cannot be addressed on a piecemeal basis.

A new wrinkle in Oklahoma over a five year old winter storm that prompted what one regulator called a multi-BILLION-dollar financing fraud. The Attorney General in Oklahoma has moved to join its original lawsuit over Winter Storm Uri with two other filings listing more than a dozen other companies as defendants. The AG says all three lawsuits assert anti-competitive and unlawful conduct that resulted in exorbitant natural gas prices during the storm in February 2021. According to a court filing, litigating the cases separately is "profoundly inefficient," addressing the same factual and legal issues. Joining the cases could also ensure a speedier resolution. Officials accuse the defendants of creating artificial shortages of natural-gas before and during the storm, and then diverting gas from Oklahoma customers to the spot markets for exorbitant profits. The defendants have not yet responded to the motion.

Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $56.50 per barrel, after dropping 25 cents on Friday. Kansas prices are up a dollar from the first of the month, up nearly nine dollars from the first of the year, but down more than four dollars from a year ago. US crude futures prices are holding at six month highs. Near-month NYMEX crude was down a few cents on Friday to close at $66.39 per barrel. Offers were a few cents higher Monday with quotes ranging from just over $67 to just over $65 per barrel.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is unchanged nationally at 551 rigs. That's down from 592 rigs a year ago. The weekly tally shows the tally of horizontal rigs is up two from last week, but down 47 rigs from last year. Alaska is up two from last week, Louisiana was down two. Texas and New Mexico each dropped by one rig.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is eight rigs statewide, down three at three rigs in eastern Kansas, and down three at five rigs west of Wichita. Drilling was underway on Friday on leases in Rooks and Stafford counties.

Kansas regulators okayed five new drilling locations statewide, with three in Western Kansas, including on Gove County lease, and one in Rooks County. That's 53 new permit so far this year, compared to 101 a year ago.Independent Oil and Gas Service describes Kansas oilfield activity this week as sluggish, with 63 wells drilled from spud to full depth, so far this year. That's down from 111 a year ago.&nbsp; Total-footage-drilled is down 63 percent. There are 23 licensed operators who have drilled a well in Kansas this year, down more than half from a year ago.

Operators completed 13 wells this week, with eight in Western Kansas including one in Barton County, one in Finney County, and two in Gove County. Independent Oil and Gas reports 104 so far this year, down from 192 a year ago.

Commercial crude oil inventories are down nine million barrels this week, after rising nine million barrels last week. Stockpiles are about five percent &nbsp;below the five year average for this time of year. The government reports another 200-thousand barrels in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which is up 20 million barrels, or five percent, from a year ago.

US crude production is up slightly at 13,735,000 barrels a day. The Energy Department says cumulative output so far this year averages just over 13.6 million barrels a day, which is up nearly 200-thousand barrels from a year ago.

U.S. crude oil imports average just over six-and-a-half million barrels a day, down more than a quarter-million barrels from a week ago. The four-week average is down 80-thousand barrels a day from last year. Crude exports rose nearly a million daily barrels to just under 4.6 million. Petroleum product exports are up a quarter-million barrels, at just under seven million barrels a day.

The government says total petroleum product exports averaged seven million barrels a day for the month, which is up eight percent over January of last year and very close to an all-time high. The Energy Information Administration reports the increase is fueled mostly by exports of diesel fuel, which increased 19%. EIA says more diesel fuel is heading to Europe, and less to South America, which is historically our biggest customer. Diesel exports to Europe more than doubled.

The Treasury Department issued licenses to five Western oil companies allowing them to operate in Venezuela. Bloomberg says the five companies are BP, Chevron, Shell, Eni and RepSol. The licenses allow contracts with the Venezuelan oil company and limit payments to a US-controlled account. Some of the companies are still dubious. ConocoPhillips is waiting to be repaid after it's assets were seized last time it went to work there. The country’s oil production has fallen by about half since 2017, when Washington first imposed financial sanctions on the country.

News from the Oil Patch: Supreme Court to rule on state climate lawsuits

Stafford County Economic Development (SCED), in partnership with Network Kansas, is now accepting applications for Pitch Your Porch, a new downtown improvement pitch competition designed to support Main Street businesses across Stafford County.

Pitch Your Porch invites downtown businesses to propose exterior improvement projects that enhance curb appeal and strengthen local downtowns. Eligible projects include façade improvements, signage, lighting, outdoor seating, landscaping, and other visible upgrades to the front of a business.

A total of $15,000 in prize funding is available, with multiple awards to be granted. Businesses may request up to $5,000 per project and are required to provide a minimum 25% match toward total project costs.

Selected applicants will pitch their projects live during the Pitch Your Porch event on March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Stafford County Annex. Each business will have seven minutes to present their project, including design concepts and intended impact.

To be considered, applicants must submit project quotes, design concepts, and proof of funds for their required match as part of the application process. Funded projects are expected to be completed within six months of receiving funds, and photos of the completed improvements must be submitted upon project completion.

In addition to Pitch Your Porch, Stafford County Economic Development has recently been awarded USDA Rural Business Development Grants to support downtown planning efforts in both St. John and Stafford. These grants fund comprehensive downtown master planning that includes evaluating existing building and infrastructure conditions, conducting market and business analyses, and engaging local stakeholders and the public to establish a shared vision and clear goals for long-term downtown revitalization and investment.

“This program is about making visible, tangible investments in our downtown businesses while aligning those improvements with long-term planning and economic development efforts,” said Ryan Russell, Executive Director of Stafford County Economic Development.

The application deadline is March 13. Any business located in the downtown or Main Street areas of Stafford County communities is eligible to apply.

The
drought monitor, as of Tuesday, February 17th, indicates a improvement
from last week with moderately dry in extreme northwest and along the Missouri
border and a parts on the Oklahoma border in Southwest and South Central Kansas.&nbsp; Our area is in good shape.&nbsp; The six to ten day forecast (February 24 to 28)
indicates a 70 to 80% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and near
normal for precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day
forecast indicates (February 26 to March 4) indicates a 60 to 70% chance of likely
above normal for temperatures and a continued near normal for precipitation.

Last
week, we briefly outlined the water challenges facing Kansas, from declining
ground and surface waters to who uses the water.&nbsp; Here, we are simply focusing on the amount of
water and not the challenges regarding quality.&nbsp;
Today, how or can we make our water resources sustainable well into the
future?&nbsp; Not an all inclusive list but
some general ideas that are out there for discussion.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It’s
been a while now since first adopted, and the adoption is slowly picking up out
of necessity, but intensive groundwater management units are an effective tool
in decreasing irrigated water use and heading toward sustainability.&nbsp; Some in Northwest Kansas have seen
significant stabilization of groundwater levels.&nbsp; Without going into tremendous detail, a group
of producers in a given area come together and agree to decrease groundwater
usage.&nbsp; The goal is to head towards
sustainability while maintaining economic viability.&nbsp; Currently for this and other work, the Kansas
Legislature has so far proposed increasing funding to 25 million dollars, but
nothing is certain yet.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The
reality is that we have over appropriated groundwater and that has to
change.&nbsp; We need to retire/decrease water
rights and allocations.&nbsp; This is tricky
in Western Kansas as it effects not only irrigated crop production but has much
broader implications.&nbsp; The cattle,
feedlot, and beef processing industry are the cornerstone of the economy.&nbsp; Losing feed for cattle production, corn,
could have a ripple effect on and cripple the cattle industry.&nbsp; So, not only do we need to decrease water
usage but find more water efficient ways to produce corn and look for
alternative crops as feed sources for the cattle industry.&nbsp; This will not only require research on the
crop side of the equation but also work and research on the feedlot side.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally,
part of the previous bullet point involves cultural practices.&nbsp; We need to do everything we can to store and
conserve soil water: decrease or eliminate tillage, build organic matter level,

One generation helping another. Arena Cheyenne-Orosco, a sixth grader at Ellinwood Grade School, is the latest winner in Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing. Arena received $100 as a weekly winner in the contest.

"I can make a difference by going and helping my mom at the nursing home," Arena said.

All Barton County students, grades K-6, are eligible for the Make a Difference Contest, which will run for the duration of the 2025-26 school year. As a weekly winner, Arena and her teacher, Mr. Stint, are now eligible for the monthly prize. That lucky student will win another $100 and a book bag filled with goodies from other contest sponsors, and her teacher will also receive $100.

Ellinwood's Cheyenne-Orosco the latest winner in Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest

During Tuesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Sheriff Brian Bellendir shared a meaningful piece of local history and a personal goal that reflects the County’s deep roots and longstanding traditions of service.

Bellendir spoke about George Moses, the first sheriff of Barton County. Moses was appointed to the position in the early days of the county’s formation, during a time when railroads were pushing west and communities across Kansas were just beginning to take shape. Before serving as sheriff, Moses worked as a guide along the expanding rail lines and later became involved with the town company that helped establish the city of Great Bend.

The Moses family played an important role in Barton County’s early development, contributing to local industry and community life. Sheriff Moses himself was also a Civil War veteran, carrying with him the experiences and responsibilities of a nation in transition into the challenges of building a new community on the frontier.

As part of preserving that legacy, Bellendir shared that he is working to bring Sheriff Moses’s original Colt revolver back to Barton County to place it on public display in the courthouse so residents and visitors can experience this piece of local history firsthand.

Bellendir noted that artifacts connected to Sheriff Moses and his service represent more than individual history—they tell the story of Barton County’s earliest days, its leadership, and the people who helped lay its foundation. Preserving those pieces of history helps connect current residents to the generations who came before them.

As he reflected on his time in office, Bellendir shared that honoring the legacy of those who served before him is an important part of Barton County’s story and something he hopes future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate.

The discussion served as a reminder that Barton County’s history is not only found in books and records, but also in the people, stories, and legacies that continue to shape the community today.

MILAN (AP) — No miracle needed. The United States is atop the hockey world for the first time in nearly a half-century. Jack Hughes scored the winning goal in overtime, and the U.S. defeated Canada 2-1 in the gold medal final at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Sunday, flipping the script on the international stage and claiming the country’s third men’s title at the Games and the first since the “Miracle on Ice” on 1980.

MILAN (AP) — Jack Hughes lost some teeth before he won Olympic gold for the U.S. The forward who put the puck in the net in overtime to give the Americans a 2-1 victory over Canada in the men’s hockey final Sunday did so with a bloody mouth and less of a bite than he began the game with. That’s because Hughes was spittin’ chiclets after taking a stick to the mouth from Sam Bennett in the third period. The 24-year-old Hughes is a forward for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. He scored past Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington early in overtime.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jacob Bridgeman held on to win the Genesis Invitational at Riviera for his first PGA Tour title. It was a lot harder than he expected. Bridgeman started with a six-shot lead and expanded it to seven with 12 holes to play. But he didn't make a birdie over the last 15 holes in his closing round of 72. Rory McIlroy and Kurt Kitayama made late charges that made Bridgeman sweat it out. They finished one shot behind. Bridgeman is the first player to make his Riviera debut and leave with a trophy since Adam Scott in 2005.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Tyler Reddick rebounded from a crash to become the first driver in 17 years to sweep the first two races of a NASCAR Cup Series season, winning in double overtime Sunday at Echo Park Speedway. A week after winning the Daytona 500, Reddick gave 23XI Racing and co-owner Michael Jordan another victory by outdueling Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Carson Hocevar. Bubba Wallace, who also drives for 23XI, led entering the final restart but was shuffled to eighth. Reddick raced to his 10th victory in NASCAR’s premier series despite front-end damage to his No. 45 Toyota sustained in a nine-car crash on the 224th lap. He's the sixth driver to open a Cup season with consecutive victories and the first since Matt Kenseth in 2009.

VERONA, Italy (AP) — The twin Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo have been extinguished, signaling the end of the most spread-out Winter Games. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry declared the 2026 Games over in remarks to the closing ceremony in Verona, telling the local organizers that they “delivered a new kind of winter games and you set a new, very high standard for the future.” A total of 116 medal events have been held in eight Olympic sports across 16 disciplines, including the debut of ski mountaineering this year, over the course of 17 days of competition.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James and Pat Riley both sometimes wonder what might have been if their four-year partnership with the Miami Heat had lasted a whole lot longer. Both NBA icons speculated on that period in their careers after James' Lakers honored Riley with a statue outside their downtown arena recognizing his years as the Lakers' coach. Riley says he selfishly wished James had stayed in Miami for another six or eight years after his four-year tenure alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Riley and James helped the Heat win two titles and reach four NBA Finals.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have honored Pat Riley with a statue outside their downtown arena. He spent two decades with the organization, eventually becoming the coach who masterminded their Showtime championship era. The 8-foot likeness of the Hall of Fame coach wearing one of his famed Giorgio Armani suits will stand between statues of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson. Riley proudly recognizes his NBA roots are in Los Angeles, where he remains a city icon after spending two decades with the Lakers as a player, a broadcaster and coach. He won six championship rings with the franchise.

Four Premier League players have been targeted with racist abuse online after their weekend games. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana and Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri shared images of racist messages they were sent privately over Instagram following their teams’ 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Wolverhampton striker Tolu Arokodare showed racially aggravated messages he received on Instagram after a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace on Sunday, during which he had a penalty saved. Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle had racist abuse online after a 3-1 loss to Fulham. The incidents came days after UEFA began an investigation into claims by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior that he was racially abused on the field by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during a Champions League game.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Violence linked to a major cartel leader’s death has forced Mexico to postpone four high-level soccer games. Authorities called off two top division matches in the men’s and women’s leagues, plus two second division games. The postponements come after the Mexican army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” Officials say cartel members then burned vehicles and blocked roads across many states. Guadalajara is a 2026 World Cup host city. The federation has not postponed Mexico’s Wednesday friendly in Queretaro. The Mexican Open tennis tournament in Acapulco is expected to continue as usual.

Surveys in the past have indicated that the No. 1 reason high school students participate in sports is to have fun competing with their peers.

Fast forward from those surveys of yesteryear to today, the question now is, are they really having fun? While we hope the answer is “yes” for the majority of student-athletes, we know that some are mired in the “High School Grind” – that never-ending packed schedule of academics, practices, high expectations, pressures from parents and others to succeed – all of which is constantly surrounded by the noise of social media.

In addition, many high school student-athletes are competing on out-of-school club teams year-round, which has added to the mental strain and intensified the pressure to succeed. And, in many cases, that push to succeed is starting way before high school.&nbsp;

With the pressures facing today’s student-athletes, resiliency and mental awareness are key factors in handling that daily grind and finding the fun of high school education-based sports.&nbsp;

Fun is about the opportunity to be a part of a team, to work together with others and learn how to handle the ups and downs of life. Fun is about growing and learning and improving and gaining confidence.

When that pressure from others to win and succeed overtakes the fun and enjoyment of playing sports, the grind can become larger than life and mental health is compromised.

Because of the importance of the mental wellness of high school student-athletes and coaches, the NFHS devoted its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://tools.nfhs.org/uploadedfiles/3dIssue/HSToday/2026issues/february2026/index.html">February issue</a>&nbsp;of High School Today to this important subject.

In the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/stories/mental-growth-in-high-school-athletics-being-intentional">“Mental Growth in High School Athletics: Being Intentional”</a>&nbsp;article, Tom Horner said that when athletes learn to train mind, body and sport, they grow not just as competitors, but as people.

“The pressures facing today’s athletes are different than even a decade ago,” Horner said. “Social media, comparison, academic expectations, lack of sleep, youth burnout, constant stimulation, and the fear of “not being enough” are real. Sports are often the one place they want to feel grounded, connected and confident, and kids are counting on us (coaches, teachers, administrators) to help them get there.”

In the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/stories/helping-athletes-manage-pressure-protect-their-mental-health">“Helping Athletes Manage Pressure, Protect Their Mental Health”</a>&nbsp;article, Missy Townsend noted that supporting the mental well-being of student-athletes starts with intentional leadership from athletic administrators.

“When you teach young people how to manage pressure, face adversity and support one another, you are not just building better athletes, you are building stronger human beings,” Townsend said. “The scoreboard will always matter, but the greater score is measured in how our student-athletes grow – how they handle a loss, how they lift each other up, and how they carry the lessons of sport into every aspect of their lives.”

In the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/stories/empowering-high-school-students-to-self-advocate">“Empowering High School Students to Self-Advocate”</a>&nbsp;article, Dr. Steve Amaro said the student voice is powerful, and student participants can be divisive if proper direction isn’t provided. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Athletic and activity programs are great ways to support student learning and test student limits,” Amaro said. “When students are given time to practice how to appropriately communicate their messages, they are more likely to become positive contributors and better understand how their voice can affect both team and individual performance. Schools and programs that develop ways to promote student self-advocacy empower students to realize their voice can drive improvement and help everyone achieve their goals.”

In Dr. Jennifer Wider’s article on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfhs.org/stories/weight-of-the-jersey-why-mental-health-is-vital-in-high-school-sports">“Why Mental Health is Vital in High School Sports”</a>&nbsp;article, VJ Sarullo, athletic director of Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, stated the following:

“Student-athletes are balancing academics, practices, competitions, social expectations and high personal standards. While sports can be a powerful outlet and source of connection, they can also magnify stress if well-being is not prioritized. We take a collaborative and proactive approach to support student-athlete mental health. The athletic department and its staff work closely with school counselors, teachers and administrators to ensure that student-athletes know support is available and accessible."

In the sports medicine article titled&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfhs.org/stories/sport-specialization-and-youth-athletes-considering-mental-health-well-being">“Sport Specialization and Youth Athletes</a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfhs.org/stories/sport-specialization-and-youth-athletes-considering-mental-health-well-being">:&nbsp;</a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfhs.org/stories/sport-specialization-and-youth-athletes-considering-mental-health-well-being">Considering Mental Health, Well-Being,</a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.nfhs.org/stories/sport-specialization-and-youth-athletes-considering-mental-health-well-being">”</a>&nbsp;Dr.Brandonn Harris noted several concerns about early sport specialization that could affect the mental health of student-athletes:

“In terms of overall mental health and well-being, we know that early sport specialization can place young athletes at risk for burnout, injury, decreased mood, anxiety, less enjoyment, and lower self-esteem, all of which certainly have the capacity to impact their mental health and wellness. Further, evidence has suggested that early sport specialization before the ages of 13-15 does not appear to increase the likelihood for future athletic success. It appears that the opposite may in fact be true.”

We encourage schools to take advantage of these resources as well as courses on the NFHS Learning Center (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.nfhslearn.com/">www.NFHSLearn.com</a>) to address the mental wellness of student-athletes and help them to continue finding the fun of high school sports.

Area Sub-State Pairings 1A DI/1A DII

The 20th ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team relied on a late defensive stand Saturday afternoon inside the Fleske Fieldhouse, holding off Independence Community College 92-91.

After an early back-and-forth stretch, the Cougars created separation midway through the first half with a balanced scoring burst, building the margin to double digits before carrying a 48-38 lead into the locker room.

A whistle-heavy second half, featuring 58 combined free throw attempts, turned the final 20 minutes into a grind as Barton's double-digit lead quickly disappeared. Independence surged ahead early before the Cougars answered with an 8-0 run to regain control. The Pirates later tied the game at 91-91 with 36 seconds remaining, but&nbsp;Jayden Ramirez&nbsp;split a pair at the line with 21 seconds left, and Barton's forced contested corner three drew short to seal the one-point win.

The win pushes Barton's streak and salvages the season series split with Independence. The Cougars now sit alone in second place in the Jayhawk at 15-7 and 20-8 overall, holding a one game edge over third, while the Pirates drop to 12-9 in league play and 14-13 overall.

Barton closes out its two-game homestand Wednesday night in its regular season home finale on Sophomore Night, hosting Seward County Community College at 7:30 p.m. inside the Fleske Fieldhouse. The contest also marks the return of former Cougar assistant coach Austin Downing, now leading the Saints.

Noah Williams&nbsp;led a five-pack in double figures with 23 points and nine rebounds, going 10-of-11 at the free throw line.&nbsp;Brian Sullivan, Jr.&nbsp;poured in a career-high 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting, adding six rebounds in 28 minutes while helping the Cougars to a plus-29 bench advantage. Ramirez added 12 points, converting 8-of-10 at the stripe, including the go-ahead free throw with 21 seconds remaining.&nbsp;Sebastian Muchitsch&nbsp;chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, while&nbsp;Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points and four rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.

Barton shot 47.5 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from beyond the arch while converting 33-of-39 at the free throw line. Despite being outrebounded 42-34, the Cougars controlled the paint 48-28 and forced 17 Pirate turnovers, turning those into a 22-10 advantage in points off miscues.

Independence shot 40.3 percent from the field and 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from three-point range while converting 31-of-37 at the free throw line. Trae Lewis led the Pirates with a game-high 30 points, while David Wilson added 21. Lonnie Bass Jr. recorded 18 points and a game high 18 rebounds, helping fuel Independence's plus-eight advantage on the glass.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has ordered nonessential diplomats and their family members at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut to leave Lebanon, a State Department official said Monday, as tensions over Iran rise with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-russia-drill-nuclear-talks-aircraft-carrier-0456903e0d7a24cfcdc33d53732dee2f">the threat of a potentially imminent military strike</a>.

he official said a continuous assessment of the regional security environment determined it was “prudent” to draw down the U.S. Embassy’s footprint so that only essential personnel remain at their posts.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been formally announced, said that it is a temporary measure and that the embassy will remain operational.

Lebanon has been the site of numerous Iran-related retaliatory attacks against U.S. facilities, interests and personnel for decades given Tehran's support for and influence with the Hezbollah militant group, which is held responsible for the deadly bombings of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983 and an embassy annex in 1984.

As such, changes in the staffing status of the embassy in Beirut have often been seen as a bellwether for potential U.S. or Israeli military action in the region, particularly against Iran. A similar ordered departure was imposed for Beirut and other embassies in the region, including in Iraq, shortly before President Donald Trump ordered&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-war-nuclear-talks-geneva-news-06-21-2025-a7b0cdaba28b5817467ccf712d214579">military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities</a>&nbsp;last June.

It was unclear if other American embassies in the Middle East would implement similar orders.

Oman’s foreign minister, Badr al-Busaidi, said the U.S. and Iran plan to hold&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-protests-khamenei-universities-tehran-trump-military-dd81a3d1e464975c56f02b729e742014">their next round of nuclear talks</a>&nbsp;Thursday in Geneva.

Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, told CBS on Sunday that he expected to meet U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff then and said a “good chance” remained for a diplomatic solution on the nuclear issue.

Araghchi has said a proposed deal would be ready to share within days, and he told CBS that Iran was still working on it.

Asked Friday whether the U.S. could take limited military action as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-nuclear-talks-iaea-dbed41b78ce2ddabc8a04349e72abeba">the countries negotiate</a>, Trump said, “I guess I can say I am considering that.” He also told reporters later that Iran “better negotiate a fair deal.”

Indirect talks between the longtime adversaries in recent weeks have made little visible progress. Beyond the nuclear program, Iran has refused to discuss wider U.S. and Israeli&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-iran-trump-netanyahu-nuclear-talks-fa5be8069deb4b1b01cdf30d3e3525e7">demands that it scale back its missile program</a>&nbsp;and sever ties to armed groups.

Tensions with Iran soar: U.S. orders some diplomats to leave Lebanon

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court">The Supreme Court</a>&nbsp;said Monday that it will hear from oil and gas companies trying to block lawsuits seeking to hold the industry liable for billions of dollars in damage linked to climate change.

The conservative-majority court agreed to take up a case from Boulder, Colorado, among&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-climate-change-oil-gas-companies-7548dbfe5cb38a9174330602cbef42c2">a series of lawsuits</a>&nbsp;alleging the companies deceived the public about how fossil fuels contribute to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/climate-and-environment">climate change</a>.

Governments around the country have sought damages totaling billions of dollars, arguing it's necessary to help pay for rebuilding after wildfires, rising sea levels and severe storms worsened by climate change. The lawsuits come amid&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/youth-climate-change-lawsuit-montana-7c4b6261f610d504995743f7320533e8">a wave of legal actions</a>&nbsp;in states including California, Hawaii and New Jersey&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5534fe18ac5352ba43c74c9a64d6a20a">and worldwide</a>&nbsp;seeking to leverage action through the courts.

Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil appealed to the Supreme Court after Colorado’s highest court let the Boulder case proceed. The companies argue emissions are a national issue that should be heard in federal court, where similar suits have been tossed out.

“The use of state law to address global climate change represents a serious threat to one of our Nation’s most critical sectors,” attorneys wrote.

President Donald Trump's administration weighed in to support the companies and urge the justices to reverse the Colorado Supreme Court decision, saying it would mean “every locality in the country could sue essentially anyone in the world for contributing to global climate change.”

Trump, a Republican, has criticized the lawsuits in an executive order, and the Justice Department has sought to head some off in court.

Attorneys for Boulder had agued that the litigation is still in early stages and should stay in state court. “There is no constitutional bar to states addressing in-state harms caused by out-of-state conduct, be it the negligent design of an automobile or sale of asbestos,” they wrote.

Just after 9a.m.&nbsp; February 20, police arrested 27-year-old Tyrea Stewart of Junction City in the 100 block of Courthouse Plaza in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.
