Spring is just around the corner, and that means it’s time
to get outside and get some of those home improvement projects underway. Eagle
Media is ready to help. The Eagle Media Home &amp; Garden Show, presented by
Kelly’s Garden Sense, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at the Great Bend Events
Center.

"It’s all indoors, and it’s completely free to attend,” said
Eagle Media Digital and Marketing Consultant Shannon Towns. “You can come check
out local contractors, landscapers, home improvement pros, and a lot more. We’ll
also have the Golden Belt Humane Society Adopt A Pet. They’ll be serving
walking tacos with a cookie and bottle of water for a $10 donation.”

Avast Ye Java and Freaking Delicious Cheesecake Company will
be selling drinks and snacks outside the Events Center for the all-day event.

“It’s a great time to come out and get inspired from local
businesses when you’re thinking about doing a remodel project, maybe some
landscaping, or any spring projects coming up,” Towns said. “Come check it out.
We invite everyone to come out and attend.”

Nearly three dozen vendors have already signed up to attend
this year’s Home and Garden Show.

Eagle Media’s Home & Garden Show returns to Great Bend on March 14

Daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 8 and the American Red Cross encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms as they&nbsp;turn their clocks forward to make sure the devices are working.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half as you only have about two minutes to safely get out,” said Shannon Wedge, executive director of the South Central and Southeast Kansas chapter. “Every second counts when there’s a home fire and the sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get to a safer place. When daylight saving time ends this weekend, test your smoke alarms to help prevent a tragedy in your home.”

Local Red Cross volunteers often respond to help Kansans affected by home fires, which account for most of the about 65,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to annually across the country. These volunteers are on the scene with emergency managers and first responders to aid their neighbors after a tragedy.

American Red Cross: Check smoke detectors when changing clocks this weekend

Cheyenne Bottoms, located on the Central Flyway, a bird migration route that connects Canada to South America, is an ideal place to witness the spring migration of many bird species. Seventy percent of all the different shorebird species in North America have been recorded at Cheyenne Bottoms, and late March through early May is prime time to view the birds using the local wetlands for rest and fuel.

This spring, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center is offering 2-hour Birdwatching van tours through the Cheyenne Bottoms wetlands.&nbsp;Bird communities can change quickly from day to day during the spring, but the migration usually peaks around the last two weeks of April through the first two weeks of May.&nbsp;Birdwatchers will get the chance to see a variety of wetland birds during the tours, including ducks, such as Blue-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, and Gadwall; shorebirds, such as Long-billed dowitchers, Least sandpipers, Willets, Black-necked stilts, and American avocets; wading birds, such as Great blue herons, Black-crowned night herons, and Snowy Egrets; and other wetland specialist birds, such as American white pelicans, Double-crested cormorants, and Pied-billed grebes.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center to host spring Bird Migration Tours

The next generation of entrepreneurs took center stage on March 4 at the Youth Entrepreneur Challenge (YEC) held at the Great Bend Event Center, where five student-run businesses presented their ideas to a panel of judges and members of the community.

The Youth Entrepreneur Challenge is a statewide competition that encourages high school students to develop real-world business concepts, build business plans, and pitch their ideas to industry professionals. Participants gain valuable experience in entrepreneurship, communication, and problem-solving while competing for the opportunity to advance to the state competition.

This year’s local competition featured five impressive student ventures, each demonstrating creativity, ambition, and strong business potential.

Taking home First Place and the Grand Prize was Zoey Bogner with her business Talk that Talk. Zoey’s venture offers professional voice-over services for a variety of media, including radio and television commercials, audiobooks, video games, and other audio productions. With a clear niche and growing demand for voice talent across multiple industries, her business stood out to judges for its creativity and scalability. Zoey will now advance to represent the community at the state Youth Entrepreneur Challenge competition.

Second Place was awarded to Bennett Jacobs and Callie Umphres for their business Ice on Wheels, a mobile snow cone stand designed to serve customers at events, sporting tournaments, and community gatherings. Their business plan also includes a seasonal expansion that would offer hot chocolate and apple cider during colder months. In addition to placing second, Ice on Wheels also earned the People’s Choice Award, voted on by event attendees.

Third Place went to Amelia’s Custom Art Keychains, a business that turns her artistic talent into personalized keepsakes. Amelia hand-draws custom artwork that is turned into unique keychains, showcasing her creativity and attention to detail.

· PK Podcast, a podcast created for preacher’s kids that shares stories and provides insight into the unique experiences of growing up in traveling ministry families.

“I have done the youth entrepreneurship challenge for three years,” Zoey Bogner said. “Competing in YEC has given me so much confidence. I now feel confident going up and talking to people at events and in the community. I have so much passion, and I love what I do. I hope more youth get involved in (YEC) and it continues to grow and shape Barton County.”

The event highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit of local youth and the importance of supporting the next generation of business leaders.

Zoey Bogner will go on to represent the community at the Kansas State Youth Entrepreneur Challenge, where she will compete against top student entrepreneurs from across the state.

All boats rise in high tides: if it’s good for Barton
Community College, it’s good for Barton County and all the communities we live
in. That’s how Dr. Marcus Garstecki, BCC president, opened Thursday morning's
announcement from Sen. Jerry Moran at the college’s KanEquip Learning Center. Moran
was in Great Bend to announce a $425,000 allocation to the school’s CDL and ag-tech
program.

“Congress has a piece of legislation that we just passed –
passed by the house, passed by the senate, signed by the president – there’s
designated spending for Barton Community College for workforce training within
the CDL program and the ag-tech program, for purposes of buying equipment,”
Moran said.

In 2024, Barton opened the KanEquip Learning Center, which
houses programs like agriculture business management, crop protection, commercial
driver’s license, and the Top Tech ag mechanics programs. Garstecki called Tuesday’s
announcement a game-changer for the school.

“These are large pieces of equipment that we would have a challenge
being able to fund on our own,” he said. “For example, we’re going to have a
new semi in our CDL program. Without these funds to help us, that’s something
that would be on the wish list for a long time. Our students are going to get
trained on the best equipment, state of the art, and that’s what truly prepares
them for what they’re going to see in the workforce.”

Garstecki said a critical piece of the mission at Barton
Community College is to prepare students for high-paying jobs and careers. Mike
Johnson, chairman of the Barton Board of Trustees, explained how junior
colleges play a role.

“The Kansas community college system currently provides over
70 percent of all technical training in the state of Kansas,” Johnson said. “This
federal funding we received was instrumental in allowing Barton to purchase
some of the critical equipment needed for this facility we are standing in
today, and helps us continue our mission to provide quality education to our
students, and to provide local employees for our employers.”

Moran said the money allocated to Barton is not additional tax
dollars being spent, but rather money that was already going somewhere. He has
made a push to give tax dollars to law enforcement and workforce-related
causes.

“Every time we have the opportunity to help a community
college or technical college have the resources necessary to train workers for
business that are already looking for students with those capabilities, we’re
looking for opportunities to designate those funds,” said Moran.

Garstecki said students in those programs will benefit from
using state-of-the-art equipment and technology, but Thursday’s announcement
will also benefit instructors.

“At the end of the day, we have some of the best instructors
around,” Garstecki said. “You will not find a better group who teach in this
building and around our campus day in and day out. But we also know when we
equip them with the best tools, it only enhances the educational experience and
training they are able to give to our students. That’s critical to the job we
do.”

Sen. Moran makes Great Bend stop to announce $425,000 allocation to BCC

Six couples will be honored on March 13 as the 2026 class of Kansas Master Farm Families in recognition of their leadership in agriculture, environmental stewardship and service to their communities.

The statewide awards program is in its 99th year and is sponsored by K-State Extension and Kansas Farmer Magazine.

The annual awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan.

From &nbsp;Barton County, Keith and Connie Miller were nominated and will be honored at the banquet. Perpetuating the family farm homesteaded in 1920 northeast of Great Bend, the Millers have steadily grown their diversified operation over the last 49 years.

Coming out of high school, Keith put in one year at Barton County Community College before returning to the farm for good. Starting in 1976, he and Connie partnered with Keith’s parents, Carl and Evelyn, raising beef cows, hogs and 500 acres of crops on the farmstead just south of the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge.

Keith and Connie fully took over the operation in 1990, which has now expanded to several thousand acres of wheat, corn, alfalfa, soybeans and grain sorghum. They also run a 200-head beef cattle herd. Their three daughters, Amber, Brooke and Dara, were all active on the farm growing up. Currently, Dara and her husband Jason are directly involved in the operation. As the business manager for the operation, Connie is in the process of handing those duties fully over to Dara.

Keith and Connie have been fully committed to leadership and service at the local, state and even national levels. Keith is a past chair of the U.S. Meat Export Federation, and a past chair of the American Farm Bureau Federation’s international trade committee. He has also served on the Kansas Farm Bureau’s Board of Directors for 17 years, and is the current chair of the Kanas Soybean Commission.

Connie was a long-time 4-H community leader and church youth leader, among other local leadership positions. Keith and Connie fully credit their family support system for their extensive accomplishments.

BOOR: Keith and Connie Miller to be recognized as Kansas Master Farm Family

A Larned native is using her personal and professional backgrounds in her new position at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), which she describes as a facility that combines “small-town heart with big-city healthcare.”

Allisa Spain is the new director of marketing and the PVCH Foundation.

“I have always had a passion for public relations, marketing and graphic design,” Spain said. “Whether sharing an update, promoting a service, celebrating our staff or asking the community to invest in a cause, the focus is on clear communication, consistency and respect for the people we serve.

“This mindset aligns closely with the hospital’s mission. It is my privilege to tell the story of PVCH, while strengthening relationships, and supporting its future through communication and strong Foundation leadership.”

Spain emphasized that residents of Pawnee and surrounding counties “should be proud of this wonderful facility. All of us, myself included, have a stake in the hospital’s success. It is a big part of the reason I want to raise my children here.”

Prior to taking on this new position, Spain led the communication and engagement efforts in Larned USD 495.

“That position helped me build on relationships I have fostered over a lifetime,” she commented. “It allows me to feel comfortable working independently by moving quickly when needed and thinking strategically when it comes to long-term goals.

“These experiences support the missions of the hospital and Foundation,” Spain said. “We understand the importance of donor relations, fundraising events, grant writing and communication with boards of directors and trustees. I take this responsibility seriously because I genuinely care about the people in this great central Kansas community.”

After graduating from Larned High School in 2013, Spain earned her cosmetology license in 2014 at Bellus Academy in Manhattan. In 2017, she returned to Larned where she owned and operated Platinum Studio until 2022.

“Now that I am in this PVCH position, my background in business operations, staff management, marketing and hands-on leadership allows me to support our community in a new way,” Spain summarized. “Deep ties to the Larned area and a strong desire to support an organization that cares for local families will guide me as we share the PVCH message.”

Spain and Ty Racette have two children – Cash, 7, and Baylor, 3. Her parents are Lisa and Steve Spain of Larned.

Melanie Urban, PVCH administrator, said “Allisa’s deep roots in this community and her genuine commitment to the people we serve make her an incredible addition to our team. We are grateful to have someone who not only believes in the mission of PVCH but lives it every day through her compassion, creativity and love for this community.”

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has honored Mark Calcara with the 2025 Legacy Award, recognizing a lifetime of service that left an indelible mark on the community.

He stood with Business of the Year Stueder Contractors Inc., Citizen of the Year Nancy Sundahl and NextGen Leader of the Year Cody Harris as an honoree during the chamber’s 104th annual awards banquet Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Great Bend Events Center.

The Legacy Award is a discretionary honor selected by the chamber board, reserved for individuals whose influence spans decades. It was first established to honor the legacy of JanSport founder and Great Bend native Skip Yowell.

Calcara’s influence on the local business landscape was significant, including his service as the chamber’s board chair in 1986. His professional work and civic involvement helped set the standard for leadership in the region.

"The Legacy Award honors those who have made a lasting impact on the fabric of our community," the chamber stated. Calcara’s dedication to Great Bend continues to be felt through the businesses he supported and the community leaders he mentored over his years of service.

A lifelong resident, Calcara’s roots in Barton County run deep. A graduate of Great Bend High School, he is a fourth-generation farmer who still lives on his childhood homestead. His professional legal career began in 1980 when he opened a private practice before partnering with Earl Watkins in 1983; that firm has since grown to include nine attorneys and 11 staff members.

Calcara’s civic resume includes serving as chamber board chairman in 1986 and being named Citizen of the Year in 2000. He was instrumental in founding the Golden Belt Community Foundation and has served on boards for the Great Bend Co-op, American State Bank, and the University of Kansas Health System.

His leadership extended to regional infrastructure as well, serving 15 years as general counsel for Sunflower Electric Power Corp. Locally, he contributed to the Downtown Streetscape Project and chaired the Great Bend Economic Development board.

He is a member of the First United Methodist Church and is an active supporter of USD 428, where three of his grandchildren are currently enrolled.

Calcara earned his business degree from Kansas State University and his law degree from Washburn University in Topeka.

“Originally, he was not planning on coming to Great Bend,” his wife of 46 years Melanie, said.

After graduating from KSU, he joined the Air Force for three years. He planned to serve his country then attend law school and go out on his own.

But while at Washburn, his father passed away. “He has five siblings (two sisters and two brothers) and none of them were interested in coming back to run the family farm,” she said.

“He felt the responsibility to come back,” his wife said. So, during the summers while in law school, he came home and farmed.

After graduation, he moved back to stay. “He did farm for the first 20 years of our marriage,” she said.

“He’s from here and he knew a lot of people,” she said. So, he threw himself into the community, meeting more people and getting even more involved.

“I couldn’t understand this at first,” Melanie said. She thought he was spreading himself too thin.

“I didn’t understand the importance of community,” she said. But Calcara did and “eventually, he won me over.”

Today, both are integral components of Great Bend.

They have two sons: Taylor, his wife Kelly and three children of Great Bend; and Chris, his wife Vanessa and three children of Lenexa. “We are blessed with six grandchildren,” Melanie said.

Taylor is continuing the family’s legal legacy. He joined his father’s law firm.

Melanie noted his deep devotion to the city. "Most people will say that he ‘bleeds purple,’" she said. "While this may be true, I’ve always said he has a great big ‘GB’ branded on his heart."

Region 6 Women's Basketball Tournament Pairings

The Barton Community College basketball teams will open postseason play on their home floor as both programs host opening matchups in the upcoming Region 6/Plains District Tournament.

The Lady Cougars (14-16) earned the tournament's No. 7 seed and will host 10th-seeded Cloud County Community College (14-15) in a first-round contest 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Fleske Fieldhouse. The winner advances to Tuesday's quarterfinal round, traveling to face No. 2 seed and ninth-ranked Dodge City Community College (25-4).

The No. 17 ranked Cougar men (22-8) secured the tournament's top overall seed and will enjoy home-court advantage throughout their playoff run. Barton will host a quarterfinal matchup Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the first-round game between No. 8 seed Cloud County Community College (17-13) and No. 9 seed Garden City Community College (17-13).

Quarterfinal winners in both the men's and women's brackets advance to Great Bend, where Barton will host the semifinal and championship rounds beginning Friday, March 13, inside Fleske Fieldhouse.

Barton season ticket holders and parking passes will be honored through the quarterfinal round. Ticket prices are $12 per day for reserved seating, $7 per game for general admission, and $4 for K-12 students, with Pre-K admitted free. Live streaming will also be available at $8 per contest.

Once the tournament reaches the semifinal round, all ticketing and live streaming will be conducted through the KJCCC.

Postseason basketball returns to Fleske Fieldhouse as Barton hosts Region 6 openers

DENVER (AP) — LeBron James has become the NBA’s leader in career field goals. James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Thursday night in Denver. James set the mark with his third basket of the night against the Nuggets. That gave him 15,838 buckets. Abdul-Jabbar finished with 15,837. Karl Malone is a distant third. James already owns the career scoring record and he has topped 50,000 points across the regular season and playoffs. Lakers coach J.J. Redick compared James' long run to Bruce Springsteen’s catalog.

TOKYO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani has thrilled fans by hitting a grand slam in the second inning at the World Baseball Classic, pushing Japan to a quick 4-0 lead over Taiwan. He also doubled in his first at-bat in the first inning. That was the early game action. The superstar had put on a giant show in batting practice hours before the game even started, to the delight of many who had traveled from afar to see him.

VERONA, Italy (AP) — The Milan Cortina Winter Paralympics will officially open later Friday amid the tensions of war in the Middle East and with some countries intending to boycott the opening ceremony because of the return of the Russian flag to the global sports stage. Ukraine is leading the list of countries not attending the opening ceremony in Verona, Italy to protest the decision of the International Paralympic Committee to allow Russian athletes to compete under their own flag and with their national anthem. The opening ceremony will take place at the Arena di Verona. It's the first time a Paralympic ceremony is being held at a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient Arena has been retrofitted with new wheelchair ramps and accessible restrooms.

The Buffalo Bills have brought in a familiar face for rookie coach Joe Brady and a top target for quarterback Josh Allen, agreeing with the Chicago Bears to acquire D.J. Moore in a trade. That's according to two people with knowledge of the trade who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the deal cannot become official until the start of the new league year. They say Buffalo is swapping Chicago a second-round pick for a fifth-rounder in this year’s draft to get Moore. Brady coached Moore as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2020 and ’21.

The Anaheim Ducks pulled off a stunner of a move with less than 14 hours to go before the NHL trade deadline. They acquired Stanley Cup-winning defenseman John Carlson from Washington for a conditional first-round pick and a third-rounder in 2027. Anaheim's deal came just after Buffalo and Columbus opened deadline day with significant additions of their own. The Sabres added defensemen Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley from Winnipeg, while the Blue Jackets won a bidding war to get winger Conor Garland from Vancouver.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates were honored by President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday for winning last year’s MLS Cup. Miami beat the Vancouver Whitecaps in December for the Major League Soccer title, and the Argentinian superstar was named the league’s MVP for the second consecutive season. Trump praised Messi's efforts, saying he did something that's hard to do because he's expected to win. Messi did not speak during the event. Inter Miami was the first MLS team to be invited to the White House during Trump’s two terms in office.

MILAN (AP) — The Winter Paralympics officially open on Friday and bring a record number of athletes and medals to the Milan Cortina Games. Athletes compete in six sports. There is Para alpine skiing, Para biathlon, Para cross-country, Para ice hockey, Para snowboard, and wheelchair curling. In the ski sports, athletes compete in one of three categories: standing, sitting, or vision impaired. A factoring system lets different disability divisions compete together. Events take place across venues in Cortina, Tesero, and Milan, with wheelchair curling adding mixed doubles.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is on the verge of making a return to NBA action nine months after rupturing his right Achilles tendon injury during last season’s playoffs. Tatum was listed as questionable on the Celtics’ injury report on Thursday ahead of the team’s home matchup with the Mavericks on Friday. It is the first time this season he hasn’t been listed as sidelined and undergoing rehabilitation for the injury he suffered during Game 4 of Boston’s Eastern Conference semifinal loss to the New York Knicks last May. Tatum previously indicated that his return to the court would be for a home game.

VAL DI FASSA, Italy (AP) — In the absence of injured Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, Emma Aicher seized her chance at a World Cup downhill on Friday to cut the American superstars’ leads in the season-long standings. Aicher is the Olympic downhill silver medalist and placed second at Val di Fassa in Italy just 0.01 behind first-time winner Laura Pirovano. Aicher's run pushed Olympic champion Breezy Johnson down to third. Vonn’s season was ended by her nasty crash at the Winter Olympics and her lead in the downhill points race is just 14 with two races left. Aicher’s 80 World Cup points cut Shiffrin’s lead in the overall standings to 139.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Daniel Berger grabs an early lead at Bay Hill with a bogey-free 63 in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He played in the morning when conditions were at their best. His score was nearly nine shots better than the field. Collin Morikawa surges late with an eagle-birdie-birdie finish for 66. Ludvig Aberg matches that 66 in the harsher afternoon wind and firmer greens. Scottie Scheffler opens with 70. Rory McIlroy struggles to 72 after taking a double bogey from the water on No. 13. Only 32 players break par. Justin Thomas returns from back surgery and posts a 79.
