Mark Twain may or may not have uttered some variance of that expression, but Holy Family School Principal Debbie Hagans definitely lives it. Hagans recently earned $500 as the January winner of Eagle Media's School Hero Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing.

"Mrs. Hagans is always going above and beyond for all students, from standing outside in the freezing cold, to rain, and even 110 degrees out just to greet each student every day, and welcome them with a fist bump and wish them a great day," said Hagans' nominator. "She does a whole lot for the students, and we think she deserves to be recognized for all she does for our families."

The School Hero Contest is for any school employee who goes above and beyond in his or her job. Administrators, teachers, paras, coaches, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, and more are all eligible. A new School Hero will be selected on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and that hero will be recognized with $500 in prize money.

drought monitor as of Tuesday, January 27th indicates little change from last
week.&nbsp; Compared to the last few years we
are in good shape.&nbsp; The six to ten day
forecast (February 3rd to 7th) indicates a 40 to 50%
chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of
leaning below normal for precipitation.&nbsp;
The eight to fourteen day forecast indicates (February 5th to
11th) indicates a 40 to 60% chance of above normal temperatures and
a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning below normal for precipitation.

Tomorrow
is February 1st.&nbsp; Even though
we have finally experienced winter the last two weeks, days are becoming longer
and warmer.&nbsp; We will likely have a chance
for another cold snap or two and typically our heaviest snows are in April or
even early March.&nbsp; However, wheat will
break dormancy and resume growth.&nbsp; It’s
now time for wheat producers to put their crop in the best position to optimize
yields.&nbsp; So, what needs to be done?

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,
evaluate each field.&nbsp; What does the wheat
stand look like in terms of plant density and tillering?&nbsp; This gives the producer an idea of yield
potential.&nbsp; As it greens up and grows,
are there any biological diseases or nutrient deficiencies present?&nbsp;&nbsp; What, if any weed pressure is present?&nbsp; Hopefully, the producer has an idea of the
weed history of the field.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Second,
using a crystal ball and long range forecasts, what is indicated in terms of
precipitation and temperatures.&nbsp; This and
the first point serve as a guide for yield potential.&nbsp; And a producer needs to determine what the
moisture status of the soil is and is there subsoil moisture.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For
fertilizer, especially nitrogen, how much do you need for your yield goal?&nbsp; Typically, nitrogen applications are split
into a fall application to establish the crop and get it through the
winter.&nbsp; This allows them to evaluate
yield potential in the spring and not waste or lose nitrogen.&nbsp; Once the additional nitrogen is calculated,
what form is being used.&nbsp; Many like to
use solution nitrogen mixed with the herbicide program.&nbsp; When using a liquid, it’s best to apply it as
early as practical.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Determine
an herbicide protocol keeping in mind subsequent crops and any rotational
restrictions.&nbsp; If using 2,4-D, don’t apply
until sure tillering is done.&nbsp; Along with
this, cutworms can be a problem, depending on weather conditions, so scouting
for fields or areas that don’t green up while other fields are is important and
may require an insecticide.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If
grazing and then harvesting a grain crop, monitor crop growth and pull cattle
off before jointing.&nbsp; 

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Then
as the season progresses continue to monitor for insect, disease and weed
pressure.

Wednesday morning, shortly before noon, officers with the Great Bend Police Department were advised of a hit and run accident which occurred in the 1000 block of Washington St. It was reported the vehicle that fled was a red Jeep Liberty with front end damage. 

While on patrol, a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff's Office observed a vehicle matching that description at Casey's General Store, 1315 10th&nbsp;St.&nbsp; Officers arrived and began speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, identified as Jessy Eilers, 44, and Jessica Love, 42. While speaking with Eilers and Love, Barton County Sheriff's Office K9 REM was deployed for a free-air sniff of the vehicle. After a positive alert, officers conducted a search of the vehicle. Officers located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

Eilers was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving while Suspended and Duty to Give Information after an Accident. Love was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interference with Law Enforcement.&nbsp;

Thursday night, just after 9:30 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 3500 block of 10th St. for a traffic infraction. Contact was made with the driver, Tricia Viegra, 54, and a passenger Roy Robinson, 48. During the stop, K9 NEO was deployed for a free-air sniff of the vehicle, subsequently indicating to the odor of narcotics. Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia were located on Viegra, and Robinson was found to be in Possession of Marijuana. 

Viegra was arrested for Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and traffic charges. Viegra and Robinson were both transported to the Barton County Jail and booked in lieu of bond.

Progress in Barton County has never been about rushing toward the next headline. That spirit was on full display through Travel 389, an initiative that brought the Barton County Commission out from behind their desks and into the communities they serve. Commissioners traveled all over the county to sit down with residents, business owners, agricultural producers, and entrepreneurs. These were not formal meetings or scripted presentations. They were honest conversations about where Barton County is today and where it can go next.

What the Commission heard was both encouraging and energizing. After visiting more than 40 local businesses and listening to the perspectives of over 100 taxpayers, the Commission came away with upward of 120 ideas for local improvement. From small towns to businesses with regional and national reach, one theme rose above the rest: people care deeply about Barton County, and they want to see it grow in ways that strengthen opportunity while preserving its character.

Travel 389 was never intended to be a one-time effort. It was a commitment to listening first and leading second. The conversations reinforced the importance of encouraging development, supporting local enterprise, and keeping decision-making rooted in the realities of the communities it impacts.

That same mindset continues to guide the work of the Barton County Commission. A more strategic, project-based approach to economic development funding has helped ensure investments benefit communities across the county. Collaborative revitalization efforts in Claflin, Ellinwood, Hoisington, and Great Bend reflect a shared belief that strong Main Streets and thriving local businesses are essential to long-term success.

The Commission’s focus remains firmly on the future. Investments in infrastructure, housing, transportation planning, and essential services are being made with the understanding that today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s opportunities. These efforts are not about quick wins; they are about building a county where families, businesses, and communities can continue to thrive.

Barton County’s progress is sustained by the people who show up every day to keep it moving forward. From elected officials to county employees across every department, there is a shared commitment to ensuring this community runs efficiently, responsibly, and with care. Power Of Us: How Barton County is building its future--together

Two weeks ago, the Great Bend City Council changed its
meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Monday night, the
council will vote on another temporary change. The second meeting of February
is scheduled for Feb. 16, which happens to be President’s Day. If approved, the
meeting would be moved to Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Also during the Feb. 2 meeting, the council will hear more
updates from Great Bend Economic Director Jason Kuilan. The body will also vote
on a proposed $178,000 elevated tower project at the Airport Industrial Complex,
and vote on the purchase of a 2019 dump truck for $49,999.

Finally, the council will consider the sale of the lot just
north of 2321 Prairie Rose Drive, one of three remaining vacant residential
lots in the Amber Meadows Subdivision. Jerome Koett has expressed interest in
purchasing the lot, and city staff has recommended the sale for $15,000.

Great Bend City Council agenda items (Feb. 2)

During this week’s meeting, the Barton County Commission highlighted the continued work of the County’s Employee Engagement Committee, an initiative focused on strengthening workplace culture, employee satisfaction, and long-term retention.

Judith Castro, President of the Employee Engagement Committee, appeared before the Commission to request an extension of current committee members’ terms and to add a new member to the group. The Commission approved extending the terms of existing members and welcomed the addition of Lindsey Creamer as a fifth committee member.

The Employee Engagement Committee was established to support Barton County employees by developing short- and long-term goals aimed at improving morale, fostering connection and making Barton County an even better place to work. Committee members volunteer additional time outside of their regular duties to identify opportunities that enhance the employee experience across departments. 

Commissioners expressed appreciation for the committee’s dedication and praised its members for stepping up to invest in Barton County’s workforce. The committee’s efforts reflect the County’s broader commitment to valuing its employees and creating a positive, supportive work environment. 

With the Commission’s continued support, the Employee Engagement Committee will carry its work and ongoing projects forward.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton Co. highlights Employee Engagement Committee efforts

WICHITA – A federal grand jury in Wichita returned an indictment charging a Kansas woman with illegally taking controlled substances from her employer’s inventory, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Janice Mae Brown, 39, of Russell was indicted on one count of acquiring a controlled substance by deception.

Beginning at a date unknown and continuing through March 2025, Brown is accused of using her position as a pharmacy technician to remove amphetamine (Adderall) and methylphenidate (Ritalin) from a pharmacy without proper authorization.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating the case.

Technician from Russell accused of stealing controlled substances from pharmacy

During this week’s meeting, the Barton County Commission reviewed a request for a conditional land-use permit related to the construction of a new communications tower west of Hoisington.

Barton County Environmental Manager Judy Goreham explained that the proposal involves a 410-foot guyed communications tower to be located approximately two miles west of Hoisington, on land owned by the Loretta Tindall Agricultural Trust. The site was selected due to its location, lack of nearby residences, and suitability for supporting expanded communication coverage.

A public hearing on the request was held on Jan. 8, where the Barton County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval. Goreham noted that no nearby landowners raised objections, and the proposed tower meets all setback and land-use requirements. The location is outside of the floodplain and will not interfere with surrounding properties.

The proposed tower is expected to improve communication capabilities throughout Barton County. FAA approval for the project has already been obtained. Final building permits will be issued only after FCC approval is received, which remains a required condition of the project.

The Commission reviewed the request and associated conditions as part of its consideration process, emphasizing transparency, public input, and adherence to established planning procedures.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Barton Community College Foundation has announced the creation of the Lily Akings Legacy Scholarship, a fund established to honor the long-time Barton County Health Department Director and her remarkable commitment to public health in Barton County. The scholarship recognizes Akings' years of service as a nurse, leader, and advocate for the well-being of the region she cared for so deeply.

The scholarship will support graduates of Great Bend High School or Russell High School who are enrolled in Barton’s Nursing Program, helping future healthcare professionals follow in the footsteps of a woman who dedicated her career to protecting the health and well-being of her community. The fund is annually awarded and has been designed for ongoing support from those who wish to honor Akings' memory through philanthropy.

Janel Rose, long-time friend and former coworker of Akings, said she and other friends created the scholarship to honor her legacy while giving community members a lasting way to support future nurses.

“Lily believed deeply in caring for others and in preparing the next generation to do the same,” said Rose. “Creating this scholarship is a meaningful way to honor her life’s work while giving our community a way to come together, remember Lily, and support students who are choosing a path she held close to her heart.”

Karen Winkelman, current Director of the Barton County Health Department, shared a heartfelt remembrance that speaks to the spirit behind the scholarship.

“Lily was a devoted leader, a nurse, and an unwavering advocate for public health in Barton County,” Winkelman said. “She exemplified integrity, compassion, and tireless commitment. Throughout her tenure, she worked relentlessly to ensure the health and well-being of every resident in our community. Her legacy lives on in the healthier, stronger community she helped build.”

Winkelman added that continuing Lily’s work is a fitting memorial. “We honor her memory by serving others with compassion, lifting up those in need, and striving each day to make Barton County a better place. I feel privileged to have worked for her.”

The Foundation hopes the scholarship will inspire others to pursue nursing, a field that Akings believed deeply in, and reinforce the community’s commitment to developing skilled, caring healthcare professionals.

“We are honored to help preserve Lily’s legacy through a scholarship that reflects her lifelong service,” said Lindsey Bogner, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. “This fund invites community members to join in celebrating her impact and investing in the next generation of nurses who will care for our region.”

Make a Difference Contest 

Leading wire-to-wire in Saturday afternoon's Jayhawk Conference tilt, the Barton Community College men's basketball team delivered another complete, start-to-finish performance, rolling to an 89–66 victory over Coffeyville Community College at Fleske Fieldhouse.

Barton set the tone immediately, opening with a quick 6–0 start on back-to-back three-pointers before stretching the margin behind an 8–0 first-half run to create breathing room. The Cougars kept their foot on the gas with efficient scoring and active hands defensively, taking a 41–34 lead into halftime after holding Coffeyville to one field goal during a key mid-half stretch.

The second half turned into a runaway as Barton's pressure and pace collided. The Cougars came out relentless, opening on an 11–3 push over the first five minutes, then delivered another 11–0 surge around the midpoint to widen the gap. The final blow came three minutes later with a 12-point burst that helped Barton build its largest lead of 27 with 4:44 remaining.

Posting its largest margin of victory in the series since December of the 2021–22 season, Barton improves to 9–7 in Jayhawk Conference play and 14–8 overall, while Coffeyville moves to 8–8 in league action and 14–8 on the season.

Barton heads back on the road Wednesday for another key Jayhawk matchup, traveling to face #20 Hutchinson Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Barton shot 55.9% from the floor and went 18-of-21 at the free throw line, turning 21 Coffeyville turnovers into a 15-point advantage. The Cougars also held a 16-point edge in both points in the paint and fast-break scoring.

Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;opened the afternoon by burying the first of his two triples, then led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 14-of-18 shooting, adding five steals in a disruptive two-way performance.&nbsp;Sebastian Muchitsch&nbsp;followed with 18 points and nine rebounds,&nbsp;Majok Chuol&nbsp;chipped in 11 points and five rebounds,&nbsp;Noah Williams&nbsp;with 10 points and 6 boards, and&nbsp;Jon Byrd&nbsp;orchestrated the offense with seven assists.

Coffeyville was paced by Daniel Ntambwe's 26 points and 10 rebounds, going 11-of-11 at the free throw line while adding three assists to tie for team-high honors. Jeremiah Ibeziako was the only other Red Raven in double figures, contributing 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Wire-to-wire performance lifts Barton men to decisive win over Coffeyville

The Barton Community College women's basketball team shook off a slow start Saturday afternoon, closing the game with its best stretch to earn a 60–53 Jayhawk Conference victory over Coffeyville Community College at Fleske Fieldhouse.

After managing just six points in the opening quarter, Barton settled in defensively and began chipping away, holding Coffeyville to six second-quarter points to head into halftime tied at 23.

Seven straight points midway through the third quarter, followed by another seven-point burst late in the frame that stretched across the quarter break, put Barton in front for good. The Cougars maintained a two-possession cushion the rest of the way before closing on a decisive six-point run to extend the margin to ten for the second time, the final coming with 2:14 remaining. Defensive pressure forced Coffeyville into empty possessions down the stretch, while timely buckets and trips to the free-throw line sealed the outcome and snapped Barton's three-game slide in the series.

The season's third consecutive victory improves Barton to 7–9 in Jayhawk Conference play and 9–13 overall, while Coffeyville, receiving votes in the latest national poll, slips to 11–5 in conference and 17–5 on the season.

Barton heads back on the road Wednesday for another key Jayhawk matchup, making the short trip for a 5:30 p.m. tip at No. 20 Hutchinson Community College.

The Cougars finished with a 44–33 rebounding edge, including 14 offensive boards that fueled second-chance opportunities and a points-in-the-paint advantage.

Christal Long&nbsp;delivered a workmanlike near double-double with 12 rebounds and 8 points with 3 steals, while&nbsp;Mary Akinde&nbsp;added 11 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Alaina Eck&nbsp;led all scorers with 14 points,&nbsp;Mersadie Spray&nbsp;chipped in 13,&nbsp;Kodi Greer&nbsp;knocked down a pair of late first half three-pointers helping Barton to the halftime gridlock in finishing with 8 points, and&nbsp;Regina Donanu&nbsp;contributed 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, matching Spray with team-high honors in assists.

Coffeyville was paced by Isabella Pehrson's 15 points, with Esme Smith adding 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Late surge powers Barton women upsetting Coffeyville 

The Barton Community College wrestling team competed with an abbreviated lineup Saturday at the annual Golden Norseman Open, sending three attached wrestlers to the mats with one unattached competitor. Barton's attached wrestlers combined for an 0-6 record on the day.

At 125&nbsp;Jamal Garrett&nbsp;opened his tournament with a bye before drawing a challenging matchup in his first bout, dropping a third-period fall to No. 6 ranked Devon Fraizer of Iowa Western Community College.

Joshua "AJ" Almanza&nbsp;(133) and&nbsp;Tyler Gouker&nbsp;(141) also saw action for the Cougars, each dropping a pair of bouts in their respective brackets.

Competing unattached at 149 pounds,&nbsp;Colin Little&nbsp;posted a 1-2 record. After dropping his opening match, Little rebounded with a 50-second fall over Payton Westby of Ottawa University.

The Cougars will return home Thursday for their lone home dual of the season, hosting Neosho County Community College and Cowley College beginning at 4:00 p.m. Barton will also host Great Bend High School boys' and girls wrestling matches against Liberal as part of the evening's action.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam. The 22-year-old Alcaraz secured the Australian Open title with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 victory on Sunday over Novak Djokovic, who had never lost in his 10 previous finals at Melbourne Park. Both men were chasing history. Djokovic was bidding for an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam singles title. The top-ranked Alcaraz dropped the first set as Djokovic went out hard, but he rallied to win his seventh major title. At 22 years and 272 days, Alcaraz is the youngest man to complete a set of all four singles titles. He broke the mark set by Don Budge in the 1938 French championships.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic missed his best chance in two years of winning a record 25th Grand Slam title when he lost the Australian Open final to 22-year-old Carlos Alcaraz. It was the first time Djokovic has lost a final at Melbourne Park in 11 trips to the championship match. And he says Alcaraz, the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam, is already a “legendary player.” Despite setbacks, Djokovic remains determined to continue his quest for the unprecedented 25th major singles title.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest collection of government files released on Jeffrey Epstein include emails from 2003 between Casey Wasserman, the head of the Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee, and Epstein’s one-time partner, Ghislaine Maxwell. Among the exchanges include Wasserman telling Maxwell “I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?” Wasserman released a statement saying he deeply regretted his correspondence with Maxwell and that he never had a business or personal relationship with Epstein. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence for convictions on sex-trafficking charges.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid had missed another game because of injury during a challenging season with the Sixers. Paul George, who has faced his own struggles, offered advice to Embiid on handling injuries. George admitted in February 2025 that he relied on painkillers to play through injuries. His first year in Philadelphia was tough, marred by injuries and personal stress from wildfires near his Los Angeles home. On Saturday, the NBA suspended George for 25 games for violating the anti-drug program. Despite these setbacks, the Sixers remain hopeful for a successful season if they can stay healthy and maintain momentum.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shakur Stevenson dominated Teofimo Lopez to win a title in a fourth weight class, taking a unanimous decision to capture the WBO junior welterweight belt. The unbeaten Stevenson was in control the whole way Saturday night, hardly getting hit in the early rounds and opening a cut over Lopez’s left eye later in the bout. All three judges scored the fight 119-109, giving just one round to Lopez. Lopez tried to press the action, but too often all that accomplished was leaving himself open to Stevenson’s counter punches. The current WBC lightweight champion added the 140-pound belt that Lopez held.

NEW YORK (AP) — Boxer Jarrell Miller was hit with such a good punch it knocked his hair off. The heavyweight was facing Kingsley Ibeh on Saturday night when Ibeh landed a punch in the second round that caused a roar from the crowd, despite it not looking particularly hard. But the punch knocked Miller’s head backward, and his hairpiece popped upward from the front, revealing a large bald spot that covered most of his head. Miller finished the round with the hairpiece, then ripped it off in his corner between rounds and tossed it into the crowd at Madison Square Garden. Miller won by split decision, then rubbed the top of his head while doing a celebratory dance.

Lindsey Vonn is sitting out a World Cup super-G race on Saturday after crashing and injuring her left knee a day earlier but remains on track for the Milan Cortina Olympics. Vonn’s personal head coach Chris Knight tells The Associated Press in a text message “No she is not racing today but preparing for Cortina as usual.” Vonn posted on Instagram that “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to race today.” She adds “Doing my best right now….” with praying hands and fingers-crossed emojis. Vonn crashed in a downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on Friday and ended up in the safety nets. It still wasn’t clear what her injury was. Saturday’s super-G was slated to be her final race before the Games open next Friday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani won't pitch for Japan in the World Baseball Classic in March. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani has decided to focus solely on being the designated hitter for his country. Roberts says the Dodgers would have supported him if he wanted to pitch. World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto will pitch for Japan despite a heavy workload with the champion Dodgers last season. Ohtani says he is healthy and has had a normal offseason because he hasn't been rehabbing from surgery, which he was last year.

ESPN has finalized its purchase of NFL Network and other league digital assets after receiving approval from government regulators. The deal that was announced Saturday night gives ESPN control over NFL Network, NFL Fantasy and rights to distribute the RedZone channel. The NFL will receive a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The Athletic first reported the approval. Changes on NFL Network are expected in April when NFL Media employees join ESPN. NFL Network will be part of ESPN’s direct-to-consumer product. ESPN will distribute the RedZone channel to cable and satellite operators, while the NFL retains digital distribution rights.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Justin Rose delivered a performance Saturday at Torrey Pines that Tiger Woods could appreciate, stretching his lead to as many as eight shots until a few late mistakes led to a 4-under 68 for a six-stroke lead in the Farmers Insurance Open. Rose, who won at Torrey in 2019, started the third round with a four-shot lead and quickly pulled away with a brilliant stretch of three holes on the front nine of the South course. Rose was at 21-under 195. It was the second-largest 54-hole lead at the tournament behind the eight-shot lead Woods had in 2008. Woods practically owned the public course along the Pacific Bluff with eight professional wins, including the U.S. Open. Dahmen finished strong for a 68 and was second.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Infielder Vinnie Pasquantino agreed to an $11.1 million, two-year contract with the Royals on Friday, pending a successful physical, that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2027 season.

Pasquantino gets $4.2 million this year and $6.9 million in 2027. He has escalators that could raise his 2027 salary to a maximum of $11.5 million.

He was in his second year of salary arbitration eligibility this offseason and remains under club control through 2028.

Pasquantino comes off a season with career highs in several categories, including home runs (32) and RBIs (113) after being sidelined by injuries for much of 2023 and 2024. He became the eighth Royals player to produce at least 30 homers and doubles in a season.

“Vinnie is a premier run producer, a huge part of our team and someone our fans have really connected with,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said in a statement. “We’re proud of the player he’s become, and that he’s earned this contract. We are happy as an organization and for Vinnie personally to have stability moving forward.”

His 2027 salary can increase by up to $600,000 based on 2026 plate appearances: $200,000 each for 450, 500 and 550.

It would rise by $4 million if he wins a 2026 MVP award, $3 million if he finishes second through fifth in the voting, $2 million for sixth through 10th, $1.5 million for 11-15th and $1.25 million for 16th-20th.

His 2027 salary would go up by $1 million if he is selected to the All-MLB first team and $750,000 for making the second team.

Pasquantino has award bonuses for both seasons: $100,000 for World Series MVP, $100,000 for MVP, $50,000 for second through fifth in MVP voting, and $50,000 each for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All-Star Game election or selection, and League Championship Series MVP.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Darryn Peterson scored 18 points in 20 minutes and No. 14 Kansas beat No. 13 BYU 90-82 on Saturday in the 1,000th game played at historic Allen Fieldhouse.

Bryson Tiller had career-high 21 points and seven rebounds for Kansas (16-5, 6-2 Big 12).

Although the Jayhawks led by as many as 21 points, BYU stayed within striking distance in the second half, cutting the lead to six as the clock ticked under two minutes to go. Kansas outscored the Cougars 8-4 in the final minute to withstand the late rally.

Richie Saunders scored a career-high 33 for BYU (17-4, 5-3). His six three-pointers tied a career-high.

Kansas carried a 20-point lead into halftime, shooting 64.3% from the field. That included 18 points from Peterson and the Jayhawks made 9 of 12 from beyond the arc.

BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa, who entered the game averaging a nation-leading 23.6 points, went without a shot until the 11:24 mark in the first half. Dybantsa scored his first basket with 7:22 left in the period, ending a 13-0 run by the Jayhawks with a 3-pointer. He finished with 17 points.

Excitement about the matchup between top prospects Peterson and Dybantsa fizzled when Peterson exited the game a little more than 3 1/2 minutes into the second half. He missed Kansas’ previous game with an ankle sprain and has been limited to just 11 appearances, battling hamstring and calf injuries.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A man who shot his wife outside a Wichita elementary school in 2024 is going to prison for a long time.

On Friday, Judge Sean Hatfield sentenced 47-year-old Vincent Solomon to 330 months in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In December a jury convicted him of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, criminal use of weapons and interference with law enforcement.

Just after 9a.m. September 23, 2024, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications began to receive reports of a shooting outside Cessna Elementary School, 2101 West 45th Street South in Wichita, according to a statement from Police Chief Joe Sullivan during a news conference.

The call was broadcast on all law enforcement radio channels. A Sedgwick County Deputy heard the call and responded. When the deputy arrived, he located Solomon who was armed with a handgun. Solomon made statements that the deputy would kill him while pointing the gun at the deputy, according to Sullivan.

Solomon then ran to and laid on top of a 30-year-old woman. The deputy gave commands for Solomon to drop his gun and observed Solomon place the gun to the woman's head.

In defense of the woman, the deputy fired his gun twice. Solomon would not let go of the woman. The deputy then attempted to disarm Solomon physically. It took two Wichita Police officers and the deputy to disarm Solomon.

Investigators later learned that Solomon and woman live together and have children together. The couple had an argument in a vehicle on the way to the school which led to Solomon shooting the woman multiple times. The woman ran toward the school and the suspect chased her. A Wichita Public School staff member saw Solomon with the gun approaching the school and pulled the door of the school shut and locked it so the suspect could not get inside.

EMS transported Somomon and the woman to an area hospital.&nbsp;The Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) was activated to conduct an investigation and Solomon was later booked into jail.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans are drinking more coffee than they have in decades. But fewer of them are getting it from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/starbucks-corp">Starbucks</a>.

The company that revolutionized the United States’ coffee culture remains America’s biggest player, with nearly 17,000 U.S. stores and plans to open hundreds more. But it’s facing unprecedented competition, which will make it harder to win back the customers it already lost.

Starbucks’ share of spending at all U.S. coffee shops fell in 2024 and 2025; it now stands at 48%, down from 52% in 2023, according to Technomic, a food industry consulting firm.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dunkin-nebraska-donut-shortage-5b543c958215ea5f749f3eb830653df5">Dunkin</a>&nbsp;', a perennial rival that just opened its 10,000th U.S. store, gained market share in both of those years.

Starbucks has other challengers, like the fast-growing drive-thru chains 7 Brew, Scooter’s Coffee and Dutch Bros. Chinese chains like&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/luckin-a-starbucks-rival-in-china-rises-in-us-stock-debut-2e7a1340e4084e8389c4c08a43a9a080">Luckin Coffee</a>&nbsp;and Mixue are opening U.S. stores. High-end coffee shop Blue Bottle, which has 78 U.S. stores, has opened two more since the start of the year. Even McDonald’s and Taco Bell are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mcdonalds-cosmcs-closing-drinks-a30951a5ea9c0b996febbe9a2c10038e">bolstering their beverage offerings</a>.

“People haven’t fallen out of love with Starbucks, but they’re now polyamorous in their coffee choices,” said Chris Kayes, chair of the management department in the George Washington University School of Business. “People are now experimenting with other coffees, and they’re seeing what’s out there.”

Americans love coffee. In both 2024 and 2025, an estimated 66% of Americans reported drinking coffee every day, up 7% from 2020, according to the National Coffee Association, an industry trade group.

Coffee chains are racing to cash in on that demand. The number of chain coffee stores in the U.S. jumped 19% to more than 34,500 over the last six years, according to Technomic, a consulting firm that researches the foodservice industry.

Seattle-based Starbucks was a small, regional chain when former CEO&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-howard-schultz-053345a59f1bdb53b9f55355865b216e">Howard Schultz</a>&nbsp;acquired it in 1987. Now, other small chains are seeing explosive growth. Nebraska-based Scooter’s Coffee had 200 locations in 2019; it now has more than 850. Arkansas-based 7 Brew, which had 14 locations in 2019, now has more than 600.

“There’s too much supply relative to demand,” said Neil Saunders, a managing director and retail analyst at consulting firm GlobalData Retail

Saunders said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-china-stake-boyu-capital-coffee-290006ba2eec33168b42985eb6576818">Starbucks’ size</a>&nbsp;is somewhat of a disadvantage, since it has less ability to grow sales by opening new locations.

“Honestly, they’re pretty saturated,” Saunders said. “They’re a very mature business.”

Starbucks is undaunted. At a conference for investors on Thursday, the company said an ongoing effort to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-dress-code-lawsuits-union-9d1eff89242d00f65d459d8a393f409a">improve service</a>&nbsp;while making stores&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-ceo-niccol-coffee-b547ab2141e194b30675ad8d1caff90d">warmer and more welcoming</a>&nbsp;was boosting U.S. store traffic. It plans to add 25,000 seats to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-settlement-labor-law-wages-nyc-dfe280b1505fde8b23a847a342757155">its U.S. cafes</a>&nbsp;by this fall.

“Growth doesn’t require us to become something new. It requires us to be exceptionally good at what we already are,” Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said.

Starbucks expects to open more than 575 new U.S. stores over the next three years. It developed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-coffee-open-new-stores-investors-c1ac462204ea97754380b6f6bd9f200c">a smaller-format store</a>&nbsp;that is cheaper to build but still has indoor seating, drive-thru lanes and mobile pickup. The company said the reduced scale would allow Starbucks stores to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-close-stores-layoffs-3aa70c7d3828520855998a490ebe865b">operate in locations</a>&nbsp;they couldn’t before.

Starbucks is also adding new products, like updated pastries and snackable foods that are high in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fiber-fibermaxxing-digestion-wellness-730bdd5f68f448fe979f4ebd598e2340">protein and fiber</a>, to try to win back customers.

Lack of menu innovation is one reason Starbucks has struggled, especially among younger consumers who like novelty and will try new places to find it, Saunders said.

Arizona-based Dutch Bros, for example, added protein coffee drinks in January 2024, nearly two years before Starbucks did. Energy drinks make up 25% of Dutch Bros’ business almost 14 years after the chain introduced them. Starbucks offered iced energy drinks for a limited time in 2024; executives said Thursday that customizable energy drinks would appear on the Starbucks menu soon.

Dutch Bros, which is led by former Starbucks executive Christine Barone, has just over 1,000 shops in the U.S. and hopes to double that number by 2029. It’s betting that customers want speed and convenience; nearly all of its stores are drive-thrus with walk-up windows.

Dutch Bros also focuses on value. In a recent meeting with investors, Barone pointed out that Dutch Bros’ medium drinks are 24 ounces; at Starbucks, a medium drink is 16 ounces.

Luckin, whose app brims with coupons and promotions, is also value-oriented. On a recent afternoon, one of its nine New York stores buzzed with customers picking up mobile orders. The tiny shop had no seating.

Xunyi Xie, who was visiting New York from his home in Delaware, said he stopped by to try a Velvet Latte because Luckin had a $1.99 drink promotion. Xie said he normally brews his own espresso, but if Luckin opened a store that was on his way to work, he would go there.

As for Starbucks? “I think it’s overpriced,” Xie said.

In 2024, the average customer spent $9.34 at Starbucks, compared to $8.44 at Dutch Bros and $4.68 at Dunkin’, according to an analysis by the investment research company Morningstar.

Starbucks didn’t raise prices in its 2025 fiscal year and has vowed to be judicious about future increases. But Ari Felhandler, an equity analyst with Morningstar, said it would be a mistake for Starbucks to try to win over customers with discounts because competitors will always go lower.

“Keep your prices the same and try to justify them,” Felhandler said. He thinks Starbucks’ store redesigns and new menu items will bring back traffic.

Grams, Starbucks’ chief operating officer, said the company firmly believes its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/starbucks-coffee-sales-results-d555357a6d70c0a144958826e92d91c9">best way forward</a>&nbsp;is not drive-thru-only stores or mobile pickup kiosks. It’s building cafes with comfortable seating — the “soul of Starbucks,” as he put it — that also serve mobile, drive-thru and delivery customers. Customers sometimes want something convenient, and they sometimes want to dwell, he said.

“There’s always going to be competition. We’re aware of it, we keep an eye on it for sure, but we don’t try to be them,” Grams told The Associated Press. “We offer something that most people don’t, which is a legitimate space to sit down, enjoy and use it for a variety of different reasons.”

But Kayes, of George Washington University, wonders if that strategy will be enough to keep Starbucks on top, or if customers who want a cozy or premium experience have already moved on to independent coffee shops or upscale chains like Blue Bottle.

“In some ways, I think they are a victim of their own success,” Kayes said. “I do think that the aura of Starbucks as being something special and unique and exciting isn’t there anymore.”

WICHITA — Six Republican candidates for Kansas governor stepped onto the debate stage Friday intent on finding separation from their rivals despite unanimity on key issues of abortion, marijuana, judicial bias and praise for President Donald Trump.

The goal of offering voters a distinct vision of themselves at the event sponsored by the Kansas Republican Party surfaced quickly as Charlotte O’Hara, a former Johnson County commissioner and Kansas House member, launched into an opening statement that sought to undercut a couple of her peers.

“We’re going to have some real difficult discussions this evening because Kansas has a real problem, within the Republican Party, of a vast sea of RINOs masquerading as Republicans,” said O’Hara, who directly chastised Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and Senate President Ty Masterson for being too chummy with Democrats.

Masterson, an Andover Republican, said O’Hara’s broadside against fellow Republicans had been shown to be toxic for voters.

“That type of thing is why we lose in the general election. We spend time cutting each other off at the legs,” he said, glancing at the other GOP candidates. “This is not the enemy. The Democrats are the enemy.”
