The owners of a property on 12th Street in Great Bend were given 30 days to repair dangerous buildings or the city will demolish the house. The Great Bend City Council held a public hearing on Monday for the unsafe building at 2421 12th Street.

Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said an inspection was conducted on the house as part of a search warrant by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office. The exterior shows missing shingles and windows boarded up and the front porch has deteriorated.

"There are no utilities to the house currently," said Burns. "I have noticed the door is opening in so I think we're having people going through it again. You'll see the sheetrock that is coming off and that is due to roof leaks. You also have open electrical pieces."

With no utilities to the structure, there are multiple makeshift wood-burning stoves inside the house. During the search warrant, somebody was arrested for living inside one of the rooms.

The City of Great Bend has not received any contact from the owners. If no repairs are made to the property by June 8, the city will contract out the demolition of the buildings.
