The new license plate design in Kansas garnered a lot of attention near the close of 2023. After the release of an initial design drew criticism, the Kansas Department of Revenue put out four more designs and put the matter out for a public vote, in which nearly 270,000 Kansans participated.

According to a Kansas Department of Revenue media representative on Wednesday, the new plate design is still in production. The current Ad Astra design is being issued for embossed plate replacements until the new design is available. A timeline for the completion of the new tags has yet to be determined though they are expected by the end of the year.

Those who have already paid vehicle registration for 2024 can expect to receive a temporary 30-day tag until a new Ad Astra tag, complete with a new number, is mailed. Those who receive a new Ad Astra tag will not be issued another tag with the new design next year though, according to the KDOR representative, anyone may choose to get the new design.

According to the KDOR website, the 30-day tag received in the mail does not need to be affixed to the vehicle but placed in the glove box with the new registration. Do not affix the new decal to the temporary tag. Standard plates will be mailed within 30 days of processing the renewal.
