A quality-of-life sales tax project is ready for its grand opening at Veterans Memorial Park in Great Bend. After starting in October, a 50' x 70' splash pad is nearing completion with a Great Bend Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting on May 17 at 10:30 a.m.

Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said the ceremony will be good time to bring the children.

"This has been a very exciting project," said Burns. "We'll be happy to wrap this up. Bring all the kids out. It will be end of school. We're excited to open that up."

The $680,000 splash pad features a 3,000-gallon storage tank to recycle the water. Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said there is fencing around the feature and upgraded irrigation.

"We're doing all the dirt work out there," said Keeler. "We installed irrigation and 800 yards of sod tentatively for Thursday. We'll probably put an additional 300 yards outside of it to finish it up and keep it from eroding down into the ditch."

The splash pad is located on the north side of the park, near the restrooms.
