Great Bend Post

In 2019, the City of Great Bend applied for a Transportation Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) for the 10th Street and McKinley Street intersection. Currently, there are only left-turn lanes with no turn signals on McKinley Street. The improvement would change that to protected turn signals.

The project is fully funded by federal and state aid programs. The city is currently taking care of temporary and permanent easements for the signal improvements.

The Kansas Department of Transportation requests the city to pass a resolution relating to benefits obtainable under the federal and state aid program. This step will allow the Secretary of Transportation to act for the city and in its place, obtain such benefits from the federal-aid HSIP Safety program and enter into an agreement with KDOT. Great Bend has also received the proposed agreement with KDOT.

There is no local match required. All project costs, project administration and lighting installation will be the responsibility of the Secretary of Transportation.

The Great Bend City Council will be presented a motion to approve the resolution and enter into an agreement with KDOT for the US 56 Highway and McKinley Street traffic signal upgrade. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6 at the City Hall Council Chambers.
